Day out in Kent
« on: May 23, 2009, 04:37:48 AM »
Two glorious sunny (and rather windy) days in Kent, an evening round at Deal and then 36 holes at Sandwich.

Is it just me or is Sandwich a tad overrated?  Lovely experience with all the history etc, and no denying that it is a pretty damn good course, but Deal was far more interesting and I thought simply a purer course (if that makes sense).  Strange how the two courses vary in scale - from a distance, Deal looks the flatter and less interesting, but when you actually get down to the stroke playing level the undualtions around Deal are some of the wilder i have ever seen.  Some of those green are amazing - almost every approach shot was totally unforgiving - hit it perfectly or find yourself in some ditch or other.

Josh,

It's totally true what you say of Deal looking flat and not overly interesting at first glance. I took a non-golfing visitor there a couple of weeks ago and standing in front of the clubhouse, they commented how flat and easy it looked compared to golf courses in Australia. By the time we were standing 150m from the 3rd green they were amazed by the undulation.

It really is a cool place. I'm looking forward to playing St George's in the Buda so I can compare.

Josh,

It sounds like you did the same thing I did a few years back. Afternoon round at RCP, morning round the next day at RSG. (I hope you didn't start with an 8 on the 1st at RCP).

I agree with you about your comparison between the two courses. I have regularly sung RCP's praises to Scott & now he knows what I mean on a first hand basis.

The Buda Cup is going to be wonderful for those who haven't yet been to Kent like me.  Buda rounds at Royal Cinque Ports and Royal St George plus a pre-Buda day at Littlestone.

For those who might be interested, the secretary at Rye has been very accommodating to those who want to play on Sunday.  My friend and I are off at 9:45, right after the Mayhugh-Arble two ball.

So there's at least four great links courses in the course of five days in September.  Buda Buda!  ;D

I booked a time for Bob Jenkins & me at 9:30, & I think Arble-Malone follow us.  We weren't intending to play foursomes. Hopefully the secretary didn't book us that way.

You might want to give him a call, John, as I'm pretty sure he told me 9:45!

I have one at 9:30.  Arble & Malone are the ones you have to worry about!

Really looking forward to Buda - my only links experience so far is Saunton (both), Minehead, Porthcawl, St Andrews (Old & Jubillee) and Pennard. I find it quite difficult to rank links courses between themselves let alone compared to heathland/ parkland - but I reckon my favourites were Saunton or Porthcawl probably ahead of the old - although I suspect most would disagree. Deal and RSG look great from what I have seen and can't wait to play them. ;D

It's quite surprising how the Sandwich Bay 3 are all so different. RSG definitely has more of an ambience, but I know what you mean about Deal being purer. However they play so different I find it hard to compare

Although a lot turn their noses up at it, there's a lot of fun to be had a Prince's too. Drop me a message next time you're down and come play as my guest.

Bernardo said it best concerning TOC and Hoylake - I believe the same applies with Princes.

"...St Andrews and Hoyake together as the two worst courses he has ever seen.  He may forwith be treated with silent contempt, and his opinions may be ignored.  He has effectually written himself down as an ass."

I have never known Bernardo to be more straight forward than that!

Paul,

I was at Deal today and the course was saying how excited it was to meet you as well! ;D

Easy to say about your home course, but I will anyway: from my front door to Deal and back today, thanks to trackwork, was a 5h50m round trip - for a 3h10m round of social golf on my own - was it worth the journey? You betcha, and some!

The course was looking great, and the rough was eating up balls like it hadn't been fed in a month ;D Can't wait for Buda!

A search of 'Buda' within the forum will answer all your questions and some. In short, an annual GCA UK v US Ryder Cup-style event. It's being held this year at Deal and Sandwich.

By the way, how'd you handle the tee shot on your 'bogey hole' at Sandwich this time around?

I checked with the secretary at Rye. Looks like we're all right.   Here's what he had to say:

We do not actually book specific times, so they are just a guide to us.

I'm also planning to play Rye on the Sunday before Buda.  The Secretary has given me a slot between 1.30 and 2 pm.  I'm currently a single.  Anyone out there care to join me?

Any accommodation recommendations in the Rye/Littlestone area for the Sunday evening?
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

Easy - we were on back tees into a 25mph wind, so just snotted a driver over the hill

Andrew, Joe Buehler and I are staying at the Durrant House in Rye.  I think the Rye Golf Club has a dormie house that sounds quite reasonable, but I wanted to stay in the town Saturday and Sunday nights.

The annual Ryder type event is called the Buda because one Mr S.Arble found the trophy in......Budapest! I think it made its debut in Littlestone in 2005. Similar events were played before then, but they weren't called the Buda.

People are right when they say Deal is a tough course around the greens, the greens sit on wonderful pieces of land making chipping and pitching very tough.

This last weekend saw tough pin positions and F&F fairways requiring good striking especially with the short irons. Tony, Scott and Richard Pennell all saw the pin on #16 front right in a mega tough spot just over the dune and close to the fall away towards the cycle path - built in WW2 to enable the troops to cycle quickly to their gun positions. In my second round foursome my partner left me 70yds to the pin, he and some over lunched 1st round losers suggested a safe pitch 15' left of the pin. Not knowing how tight the pin was I "fluked it" to a foot!

I pray for decent weather in September when we will all have a treat.

Mark - that was a hell of a pin. I hit driver/3 hybrid pin high to the right and took six!
