Derek,

Please elaborate on this course.  I like the look from the photographs but WHY NOT JAGGED EDGE BUNKERS? ;)

With any luck, perhaps jagged rock walls will become the next jagged frilly-edged looking bunkers.

I've always thought it adds an extra dimension of "fun-ness" to put rocks around landing areas cause you have no clue what kind of bounce your going to get.

Here are some new photos of the course.  As some of you know Tulsa got nailed with a 100 year event back in late April.  We received 3 inches in two days and then we got 4 plus inches in about 2.5 hours the next morning.  The course suffered a lot of damage.   6 of the 19 greens had to be cored out and reseeded.  4 more greens were partially cored out and reseeded as well.  Holes 1,4, and 5 we lost over 70 percent of the sod on the fairways (sod hadn't rooted in yet).  The canyon holes (4,5,6a,6b) took the biggest hit.  The creek was completely filled in with rubble and the bridges were all destroyed.  Most of the damage has been fixed but we are waiting on the bridges to be replaced.  There was some sort of damage on every hole.  As a result the course will most likely open next spring.  The grow in budget is very tight.  Course Superintendent Jeremy Dobson (formerly 1st assistant at Southern Hills) has had his hands full to put it lightly.  In the photos you will notice that the bunker sand is covered with plastic to keep the sand from getting contaminated.  All 19 greens and approaches have been grassed and are growing in.  We have 2 full fairways and 2 partial fairways to grass.

Hole 9 par 3 232 yards -  This par 3 is long but it plays down hill.  The green slopes from back to front right and left to right.  There is a side board to use as well as the approach slopes into the front of the green.  There is a saving bunker short and right.  If you fly the bunker and or the green right you be in no mans land or off the cliff.

Hole 10 par 5 601 yards - A long up hill par 5 that blends into the natural landscape.  There is plenty of room for your first shot although it appears tight because of the bunkering.  The fairway has a crown to it so it makes you choose which side of the crown to play your 2nd shot depending where the pin is.  The green complex is protected by a nest of bunkers left and front.  The right side is gentle and wide open.  The front 1/3 of the green slopes towards the tees and the rest of the green slopes back and left around the bunkers.

Hole 10

Hole 10 - view from 1st landing area

Hole 10 - view from left fairway bunkers

Hole 10 - view from the 2nd landing area

Hole 10 - 10 green complex and 11 tee's are connected with turf.  Here is  a look over to 10 green from 11 tee.

Hole 11 - par 3 172 yards - A redan like green.  There is lots of room right and long if the green is missed.  If missed long the chip will be a tough one as the green slopes from right to left.

Hole 11

Hole 12 - par 4 404 - This down hill par 4 works from left to right.  A generious fairway width narrows a bit as you reach the green complex. The green sits up a bit and falls away on all sides.  The green has a ridge on the left side that works its way right and mellows as it does, with half the green falling to the front right and the rest falls away with the lay of the land. View from the back tee

Hole 12 - view from the blue and white tees

Hole 12 - view from the ladies tee

Hole 12 - view from the landing area

Hole 12 -

Hole 13 - par 3 207 yards - there are 2 different angles for this long par 3.  the left set of tee boxes plays across a canyon while the right set of tee's plays along the canyon edge.  The green is over 10,000 sq feet and falls from front to back and right to left.  As you can see there is a side board to help direct your shots into the green.  This shot is taken from the pro tee on the left set of tee's

Hole 13 - viee from the 2nd tee

Hole 13 - view from the right set of tee's

Hole 13 - view from behind the green.  You can see both tee angles from this shot.

Hole 14 - view from 14 tee's across the canyon to 13 green complex.

Hole 14 par 4 - This dogleg right canyon hole just begs you to grip it and rip it.

Hole 15 par 5 580 yards - this long par 5 is the first of consecutive par 5's.  Both 15 and 16 can be palyed as par 4's as well.  The tee shot is down hill to a big dog leg left.  You tee of in a canyon that opens up into a low meadow.  There is a creek on the left side of the hole that crosses the fairway in between the 1st and 2nd landing areas.  15 and 16 fairways are connected with turf around the 1st landing area.  This photo is taken from the pro tee.

view from the next tee up.

view from the par 4 or the elevated tee.

view from the 1st landing area

view from the 2nd landing area into the green complex.  The green is slightly elevated.  Notice there is a side slope left of green to use.  This green is fairly small and slopes from left to right in the back and back to front in the front.  there are two deep bunkers right of the green.  If approach shot is long it will be buried in deep rough.

Looking back up the fairway from behind the green.

Hole 16 par 5 565 yards.  2nd of 2 back to back par 5's.  Your tee shot here is a risk reward type shot.  There are 3 cross bunkers which vary is distance.  the furthest bunker out is a 280 yard carry.  The fairway is crowned and very wide.  The area in between the bunkers and the tee is a will be a native grassland.  16 and 15 fiarways are conected starting about 310 yards off the pro tee.

view from the "blue" tee

view from the "white" tee

View from the par 4 tee

view from the 1st landing area.

The green complex is well guarded.  There is a huge "hogs back" as well a a back board to help direct your approach shot.  16 green feels like it is slightly perched.  The green falls from back to front and left to right.

Here is a shot form the cart path looking back down the fairway.

Hole 17 par 3 168 yards.  A medium lenght par 3 the is slightly up hill.  The green falls from back to front.  There is a long deep bunker that runs from the back of the green to about  20 yards in front of the green.  This gives the illusion that it sits right in front of the green.  Any shot to the left of the bunker will find its bouncing off a 100 ravine ending up on hole #1 below.  The is side board to the right of the green again can be used to guide the ball.

Hole 18 par 4 432 yards.  This par 4 plays a lot shorter than it looks.  You tee off to a split level fairway.  If you choose to go at the lower level you are rewarded with a shorter carry across the canyon to the green.  If you are too far left then your ball plunges into the bottom of the canyon.  The upper level is more generious and you have a shot looking down on the green but it is longer.  Going to be a great golf hole.  The green is well guarded by bunkers.  There is a bail out to the left of the green.  A big ridge cuts the green into 2 sections.  The right side exits towrds the front of the green.  The left portion of the green slopes from right to left.  There is a back board to the left section of the green.

The Patriot GC will open officially on Memorial Day weekend.  http://www.thepatriotcup.com/  I wish I could attend but I'm stuck here in Korea.  From what I am told the course is coming along nicely after the worst winter in 30 years in Oklahoma.

We had just sodded the hole about a week before the "big one" happened.  The damage wouldn't have been that bad if it the grass was mature.  The routing a awesome at the Patriot.  One of the strong points in my opinion, its a journey in and out of the canyons.  Jay Blasi did a great job with it.

I see some of my favorite thing out there.

Width.  Wow, this course looks super wide...

Tis appears the ground game can be incorporated on a number of shots...big banks and rolls all over the place.

Love the rocks all over the place...

At this point it looks somewhat featureless, almost too wide and sparse.  I wonder if with further maturity, perhaps some texture in the grasses, this will change?

What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

Michael,

Yes it is pretty wide.  Not overly wide but wide.  Yes, the ground game is in play on a lot of holes.  Jay Blasi designed many greens with lots of slope into the green.  I think a lot of options are available around the green.  Especially since they used caviler zoysia around the greens (about 50 foot around each green).  It will be mowed very tight which should give a lot of options.  The plan is to not have more than 10 foot of rough around the fairways.  That also should give lots of options off the tee.  As for the rocks, we left some around but didn't place any except for a few rock walls suppporting greens on holes 4 and 7.  Hole 7 was very unique in the fact that the "rock walls" behind the green were hand stacked 70 plus years ago to support the old dam that was there.  Jay made a special effort to keep the "natural features" that were there before we arrived.  A very special piece of land for Oklahoma to say the least.
