Eagle Point Golf

Has anyone played Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington NC?  I recently saw it made the topp 100.  I know Fazio did the course. If anyone has ever played it, what did you think?

EP has one of the best locker rooms in the country and one of the best golf professionals (Billy Anderson) in the country. Both the big and little courses at EP are always in excellent condition.

I played Eagle Point the year it opened.  I thought it was stunning.  It is one of Fazio's best.  It is demanding off the tee and has some of his best green sites he as built.

I played Eagle Point several years ago and agree with Dunlap. It is a wonderful Fazio design and the Pro Billy Anderson is a gem. The facilities are fabulous including the practice area and the extra 9-holes. The Men's locker fits like an old pair of slippers. A "must play" if accessible.

Yes, I have played the course, I'm not 100% sure I think its a top 100. I think Forest Creek (North) is better, but thats just me. While I liked the course, and its an awesome facility, it had a little bit of, uh...how to say this...blandness to it. It just didn't have the interest that I felt like I saw in FC. Yeah, I'm not certain that I'd say its one of the 100 best in the nation.

But all that being said, its a great facility, Billy, Curt and the rest of the staff down there are great guys, and I would not turn down the chance to play there again.

Had the pleasure of playing at EPGC over this past weekend.  it truly is golf at its purest thanks to billy and staff.

for those of you looking for course details:

the greens are probably the toughest i've ever played.  they run consistently above 12 on the stimp (in spring/fall) and have lots of interesting contours that make even the shortest putts a challenge.  most of the greens are built up and well protected which makes it a little tough for those of you that preach the ground game.

the fairways are generous in large part to the very windy conditions almost year-round.  that width allows for interesting angles of attack.  there are definitely some hole locations that you can only aim towards from certain parts of the fairway.

since the greens are so tough, it helps to be able to work the ball both ways.  there are a lot of holes that suit a draw off the tee and a fade into the green (and vice versa).

fazio moved a ton of dirt on what was a relatively flat piece of property to begin with.  in the process he created some major elevation changes that are rare along the coast.  some of the resulting mounds feel a little artificial, but he did a good job blending it all in for the most part.  they planted an otherworldly amount of smaller pines across the property.  in about 20 years when those pines fully mature, the course will fit into its skin better (like some of the better courses in pinehurst).

the facility is amazing.  best locker room i've ever been in... larry and staff take great care of you.  the cottages for out-of-town members and their guests are very nice with all the amenities you'd expect at an exclusive golf club.  the club's caddy program is strong, as most players walk. 

to top it all off, the par 3 is the perfect way to finish one's day at EP.  it has 9 truly distinct holes (from 90-220 yards). the last tee is perched high on a mound overlooking the entire short course... allowing for some "interesting" homemade holes when you've got the place all to yourself.

for those of you that get invited, i highly suggest accepting the offer.  i'm not well-traveled enough to know if its a top 100 course, but i do know it certainly deserves consideration.  you'll be hard-pressed to find a better soup-to-nuts golf experience anywhere.
