Garden City's 12th Inverted
« on: April 02, 2009, 09:38:14 AM »
Mike Cirba's excellent thread on the hole at Columbia got me to thinking:  Why not construct a green with a horseshoe shaped biarritz like trough in it?  Sufficient space outside of the trough could yield interesting pin locations as would the green's center surrounded by  the trough on three sides.  For drainage the green could be tilted upward toward the rear with the trough gradually deepning toward the rear of the green.

Thoughts?

Bogey,

The closest thing that came to mind is something like Engineers 1st green, where the right side is a concave bowl that needs to be skirted to get to rear hole locations.    This picture doesn't show it really well, but might convey the idea.

The Castle Course may have up to five of these.

The 12th at Forsgate is a green that came to my mind.

The picture below is from behind the green.  It is a short par 3, about 140 from the back tees.

JSlonis,

And a wonderful "short" hole it is.

Mike,

The answer to your question is ...... because drainage probably prevents the configuration you allude to.  The trough would collect water from around the entire green.

Secondly, because it's easier to mow a mound than it is an equivalent trough.

But, I like the concept.

Mike,
Sounds like the green slope might take care of drainage.  I really like the idea.
