Okay, that was a lengthy enough subject.

We've had fights over drinks at a Toronto pub, now the ultimate GTA GCA golf outing -- Otter Creek with the architect, Dick Kirkpatrick. I'm just determining interest now -- but we're thinking of a June date in the middle of a Saturday afternoon. We'd play and then retreat to some middle ground -- looking like the palatial Brantford estate of Ian Andrew -- for burgers, beers and discussions about the course. Given Dick's schedule as a superstar of the Southern Ontario racing circuit (no kidding), I'm thinking June 20 might be a good date.

For those of you who aren't familiar with Otter Creek, it opened last year, the third full design by Kirkpatrick, and is built on an intriguing mix of Southern Ontario farmland and rolling sandy soils. It is about a half hour south of the Woodstock area. The course has been exceptionally well received and includes Kirkpatrick's homages to North Berwick (the Redan, 12th) and Pine Valley (the 13th if I recall correctly). I really enjoyed it and I think this would give the Ontario boys (and anyone else who wants to join us) the interesting opportunity to play the course and talk about the design with the architect. Space will surely be limited to the size of Ian's deck, so I'm trying to gather who might be interested. If the 20th isn't good, we might have options in May or July as well.

Robert, I've a shoulder issue that looks like it's going to prevent me from swinging the clubs this summer but would be interested in attending. I'm thinking I could offer my services as a caddy, which as everyone knows, makes any game of golf just that much better. If you're interested let me know. The only stipulation is that the bag can't be a 40 pound tour bag.  :)

Rob, thanks for getting this off the ground. I'd love to participate but June 20 is a no-go (have to attend a wedding - but we are playing Westmount the morning of  :))

Dave Kemp

Hi Rob,

At this point that date looks good for me.  Checked with TJ and he should be available as well.   Will monitor this post  for updates.  Thanks for getting this started and I look forward to seeing the course in its finished state.

Cheers, Dave

Hey Robert,

June 20th might work our for me as well, even if I am not a "Toronto/Ontario" representative!

Keep us posted.

Yannick -- love to get you and Jeremy down and you are both welcome to hang at my place if you need a place to stay. In fact, stay Sunday and we'll play Eagles Nest....

The other thought was we could hang down Brantford way and tackle Tarandowah, the Martin Hawtree course that is about a half hour away.

Might work for me as well.

wrt Tarandowah - I bet we could also do something like a St Thomas, Tarandowah pairing as St T, while private, might be willing to accept an outside group like this.

I might be able to make it as well as I am in Toronto every 6 weeks or so..

Pretty sure I can make that date. I'll stay tuned for final confirmation of that.

Robert

Im hoping to join everyone in June.  For those who have played Otter Creek  Id love to hear your thoughts on holes # 6, 8, 13, and 17. This Woodstock layout appears to have a nice use of creeks, ravines  and  winding  streams.    Any feedback will be appreciated !

Thanks

#8 is pure target golf, with a tee shot down a hill to a fairway bounded by a stream and thick hazards. Not my favourite on the course -- and the shot to the green is tough as well.

I really like 13, which is Dick's homage to Pine Valley. I thought it was very well done, though they'd had some washout issues with the green.

17 is not a bad uphill par-3, but I found the routing awkward there. I think Dick had to use some of the exisiting Azinger routing, so there's a walk back.

Gents,

If I'm organizing a particular course for that week-end - I'll need a confirmed head count so I can approach them and ask if we can get that many tee times.

Ian, then count me as confirmed.

Ian:

Rob and I have organized the June 20th date at Otter Creek.

I think you are supposed to look after trying to arrange a game in the fall at Scarborough or another course in the east end of Toronto.

On a further note pertaining to Otter Creek:

I have been advised by Bill Searle, principle of NGF Golf, a prominent
golf course builder and renovation specialist,
and also one of the owners of Otter Creek, that he will be looking
after the cost of the green fees for our group. (up to four foursomes)

Dick: That's very kind.

To Ian's point, I think we're talking about a potential game the next day, maybe down St. Thomas way, or Tarandowah.

Rob:

Bill ruined it for me when he said he would pay the green fees.

I was going to bring my camera and get a picture of you paying to play golf HA HA

Hey Rob,

I just got wind of this today, but I can confirm for June 20th, if you still have spots available! Looking forward to it!

I would love to but I'll be playing anywhere from 160 to 180 holes on June 19th for The Canadian Cancer Society.

There was a time I could play the next day, but it has long past. :-[

Hi Rob,

If you're still looking for participants, I'm definitely interested and June 20th looks like a good date.

Robert Thompson

  • Karma: +0/-0
I just got off the phone with the one of the owners and he has said four or five foursomes are not an issue, which is exceptionally kind of him.

Right now it looks like:

Dick Kirkpatrick
Ian Andrew
Robert Thompson
Matt Bosela
Chris Parker
Guy Nicholson
Gerry B
mark chalfant
Wayne Kozun
Yannick Pilon
Dave Kemp
Greg McMullin (caddy services inc.)
TJ Rule

Question to the Montreal boys -- are you game?

So that's 13 guys now -- and we'll surely add a few more.

I see that you are "reclaiming" the Toronto Terror moniker.  How about Demon of Dorchester?

Jeremy_Glenn.

Hey all,

Just saw the post.  I'll certainly try to get there, as I think it's a great idea.  I wouldn't miss for the world the thrill of watching Robert "shock and awe" Thompson hit another 300-yarder four fairways over!  ;D

Look forward to it!

You're being kind - he's far worse than that...
