The subject implies that "classic" or non-modern are not.  But given the improvements in ball and equipment technology, are today's courses really more difficult than yesterday's?  It is my understanding that average handicaps are largely unchanged historically.

I wonder if 1930s golfers whinned about how hard golf courses had become and longed wistfully for the days of 5000-yard pre-classical era "classics".  I rather doubt it.
