Road Trip through SC, need course advice, thanks.
« on: January 30, 2009, 10:05:59 PM »
My buddies and I are making our way from ATL to MB in late March.  We are leaving at dark thirty on Thursday with our golf package starting on Friday.  We plan on playing somewhere in between ATL and MB, any suggestions?

We aren't considering the Oconee courses as we play them when at home.  We can either take I20 all the way or 85N to 385 to 26 to Columbia.  I don't know many of the courses in SC other than those along the coast, so please give me some suggestions with value being a consideration.

In the past we have driven 6 hours, gotten out of the car and teed off, that's fine but not ideal.

Thanks in advance.

Brock - I would suggest you consider the following courses. Each will provide your group with a fun experience for an excellent value:

Traveling down I-20...

The Aiken Golf Club: http://www.aikengolfclub.com/

Cobblestone Park Golf Club (Blythewood): www.cobblestoneparkgolfclub.com/
Now open for limited public play.

Camden Country Club: http://camdencountryclub.com/
A private club, but arrangements can be made for a small group.

Country Club of South Carolina (Florence): http://www.countryclubsc.com/home.html
CC of SC is a private club, but they accept limited outside play. It should not be a problem to book your group.

The south route, down I-26...

Country Club of Orangeburg: http://www.ccoforangeburg.com/
Another private club that will accept outside play. Old school look... lot's of fun!

Santee National Golf Club (Santee): http://www.santeenational.com/
Host course for the SCGA's annual Lefty/Righty tournament.

Wyboo Golf Club (Manning): http://www.wyboogolfclub.com
Interesting course out in the country. One of the favorite courses of The State newspaper's sports editor.

Michael, how did you do that?

A little Google Map magic...

Go to Google Maps... click on "My Maps," then "Create New Map."

Drag a pin to a spot on the map... give the pin a label... then name and save the map.

Voila! You have custom map.

Michael, thanks for the help.  I have organized this trip for 5 years now.  We normally take 8 or 12 and this year I am really struggling to take get 8.  Either I am less fun to be around or the economy is tough on everyone.  Thanks again.

Just north of Columbia off of I-20 is LINRICK GC, cheap and a TOUGH golf course. Worth playing if passing through....
Favorites Played in 2024:
Crystal Downs CC (MI), The Bridge (NY), Canterbury GC (OH), Lakota Links (CO), Montauk Downs (NY), Sedge Valley (WI), AIken GC (SC), Fort Mill GC (SC)

Brock,
What kind of course do you all want to play?  Some that are listed are old and pretty neat places to play (ie. Camden, Aiken, and CC of Orangeburg (not near I-20)).  I'd also add Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken which would be at the top of the list of courses mentioned so far with Camden as to quality and history.  If you want to make it more memorable I'd suggest one of those two.  I'm pretty sure each would be less than $75 for unaccompanied play.  Your shop in GA could probably get you on mid-wk with a phone call or there are members on this site that could help.  They are both laid back places in that respect.
