The Alaska Governor's $20M golf course
« on: January 30, 2009, 01:45:19 AM »
No, not the current governor. Another find researching old papers. Fore! And Maybe More had a column in 1947 or 1948 with a catchy title. The governor and a friend built a nine hole golf course on the site of a mine which had dug out about $20 million in gold and used tailings for the course.

Here is part one of the article. I apologize because there is a little overlap. Read the left column of the first picture, then drop down to the second.

Here is the second part of the article

Rich,
The best view of Russia would have been a historical one of Sitka. Thane is next to Juneau, and I am told by a rules guy that Thane is now the make out/drinking place of choice for the younger set. I have now fixed the photoshop problem with an extra dollop of scotch.

The snow has melted here.

But was this really golf, or just "iron" pyrite?  ::)

Peter,

Cool article.  Just to the left of the picture of Don Moe, there is a comment about "A mediocre golf ..."

Any idea what they were talking about there?

As some of you know, we are working in Anchorage currently. I have sent the article to my client in the hopes that the land might still be there ?   ;D

This just in from the president of the AGA, Dan Conrad...

"Forrest,

This ‘course’ is no longer in existence. However, I do know someone that played it in high school. Additionally, one of our state champions actually learned to play golf on this course.

This is near Juneau Alaska. They do have another 9 hole course that is close to the airport. However, I am told that holes 8 & 9 are under water when they have an extremely high tide….. "
