6-3's,6-4's & 6-5's
« on: June 06, 2002, 11:58:13 AM »
THE RED COURSE AT THE BERKSHIRE, ENGLAND IS THE ONLY COURSE I KNOW OF TO HAVE 6 PAR 3's, 6 PAR 4's AND 6 PAR 5's. I THOUGHT THE COURSE WAS GREAT FUN, INTRIGUING AND YET IN NO WAY DID IT FEEL CONTRIVED OR GIMMICKY. DOES ANYONE KNOW OF OTHER COURSES WITH THIS UNUSUAL NUMBER OF 3's 4's & 5's AND DID THEY COMBINE AS SUCCESSFULLY AS THE BERKSHIRE IN  CREATING A FLOWING, UNCONTRIVED GOLF EXPERIENCE?

Spring Hill (Fred Federspiel 1960) in Albany, Oregon is another. The holes are arranged so you never play the same par hole back to back. It has been 30 years since I've been there, but remember it as an average parkland course. Decent contours on greens.

The Telluride Golf Club in Telluride, CO has a similar setup.....and it is good fun....The setting doesn't hurt either....

Sandpiper Bay, a Dan Maples course near Calabash, NC has the same 6-6-6 setup.  It's not much to write home about, otherwise.

Raintree Golf Club in Pembroke Pines, Fl is a 6-6-6. It was designed by Charlie Mahannah I think and it is a typical Florida course - routed between condos with water on every hole.

It doesn't quite qualify, but Golden Valley has 6 par fives, 7 par fours, and 5 par threes.

I enjoy playing one- and three-shotters and relish the chance to play a course like this.

Cleveland Heights in Lakeland has 27 holes with only 4 par fives and 4 par threes.  The inspiration must have been The Old Course.

The Brudenell River Golf Course in Prince Edward Island (where Lorie Kane honed her game as a teenager) has that particular par configuration.

I thought it was a fine course but found it's sister course Dundarave and Crowbush Cove down the road to be more exhilerating. I wish there were more courses with the 6-6-6 configuration, though... I like that.

Hartefeld Nat'l in PA has at least half of this, with the front side comprised of 3 each.

The University of Florida course now possesses 5 par 3's, 10 par 4's, and 3 par 5's.

Interestingly, another Gainesville course does have the 6-6-6 lineup:  Meadowbrook, an early Steve Smyers design (1987).  The first nine, packed into an area much too small for golf, goes 5-3-5-3-4-4-3-3-5.  The second nine is much more serious as well as conventional, still with 3 three-shotters.  An interesting golf course and not easy to score on at only 6400 yards.

Cherry Downs north-east of Toronto. A really njoyable Howard Watson layout. The only problem I see with this configuration is that it limits yardage

the old IBM in Sands Point, taken over by the Village and now redone by Doak into a big 18, was originally a 6/6/6 layout with dual tee boxes.  It was a dog.

The Good Doctor did one that comes close, Shipley in West Yorkshire. It's currently five 5s, seven 4s and six 3s (I don't know about the history). There are successive 5s and 3s but no successive 4s.
So is it any good? I can't say as I've not played it yet but the pictures on their website were appealing enough for me to sign up for an Open there next month. The website describes it as a hidden gem and it may be the relatively low profile is due to the profusion of outstanding courses in the Leeds/Bradford area rather than deficiencies on the part of Shipley.

We opened a 6-6-6 in McKinney, Texas this year called Westridge.  I would take credit for such quirk, but the truth is we inherited a routing from a former marketing ploy that originally had six senior tour pros designing a par 3, 4, and 5 each.

Bill,

I don't really remember, but I think Chi-Chi, Sam Snead, Bruce Lietske (Dallas connection) were in there.  Obviously, a marketing idea whose time had not come!

The Old Course at the Homestead has 6 of each- as a matter of fact 3 of the first 4 holes are par 5's! but certainly isnt in the same class as Berkshire
