For those that are familiar w/ the course, what were your impressions? Is it apparent that MacK had been there? Is it worth a visit?

I visited there in1989; it poured down with rain and we never made it out of the clubhouse. They do make a nice ham sandwich though. Couldn't detect any MacKenzie in the scoop of potatoe salad. :D

A poster on GCA, Padraig Dooley, is a member at Cork GC so he would know more about it.

I played there once, but if you hadn't mentioned AMK to me I would never have guessed. Not like Pasatiempo, Meadow Club or even pieces of Lahinch. Nice course though, just not a Doak 8/9/10. (all just IMHO of course)

I'm a member at Cork. Is it worth a visit? I would say if you were in the area it would be a shame to miss it.

MacKenzie's touch is apparent in quite a few greens. We went away from his bunker style quite a few years ago but are heading back shortly.

The course is in an old abandoned quarry down by the estuary of the river Lee, so it's quite an unusual site. There is a great mix of holes and I never tire of playing there.

I'll have a look for some pictures.

I found some pictures.

4th Hole tee shot, long par 4.

4th Hole approach

6th hole approach, short par 4, the green is not a MacKenzie original, it was altered in 1964 with the 12th at St. Andrews influencing it, I believe.

7th Hole, par 3.

9th hole, par 3. The great photographic work of Aidan Bradley. This is not the line of play of the hole, the green is mainly MacKenzie with the back portion added later.

13th hole, par 3. The trees in the quarry have been removed lately.

All the club's records were lost in a fire in the forties, so unfortunatley there is no documentation of MacKenzie's work left. The routing has remained the same with holes 5,6,8,9,11,12 seeing reasonably significant alterations. The greens which show his real fingerprints are 1,3,7,9 and 17 which flow like a wave.

One other unusual aspect of the course is the number of cross-over holes. 1,2,11,15 all crossover other holes with 11 and 15 playing over the previous greens. The flow of play is never affected, though.

I believe Cork GC is often called Little Island, not to be confused with the Island GC, north of Dublin.

Are the fairways really as narrow as they appear in the pictures on their website?  Some of them look to be considerably narrower than the greens.

Hi John

When the photographs were taken for the website the fairways were that narrow.
However, I've been pushing for wider fairways for a long time and they are significantly wider now.
Every fairway is probably at least 8-10 yards wider now.
The good news continues as the chainsaw is about to see a lot of action and plans are to be put
into place to renovate the bunkers.

That tee shot on #4 is very appealing, looks a lot like #2 North Berwick.

And similarly appears you might be able to play a recovery shot off the beach!

Thanks for the photos, Padraig. It certainly seems to be worth a looksy. You mentioned the bunkers will be restored shortly. Who will be doing the work and when will it commence?

Bill, unfortunately the beach on the 4th is out of bounds.
Rocks are a bit big as well.

David, Martin Hawtree is the club architect, we are waiting on him to prepare a report
on the bunkers, but he is quite busy at the moment and hasn't been able to get over.

Padraig,

Thanks for the update.  I'm glad to hear that things are getting better there.  I hope to get there someday.
