Santa Teresa GC - 1/1/2009
« on: December 23, 2008, 06:27:11 PM »
With apologies to Bono, The Edge et al....

All will not be quiet... on New Year's Day
a round of golf, will be underway
and you want to be with Huckaby on this day....
Nothing changes, on New Year's Day......

I have long said I both look forward to and dread playing my home course with some GCAers.  Well, the time has come, it's finally going to happen.

Mike Benham, Steve Pieracci and I have an 8:07am tee time that day.  Yeah, we're old-timers for whom New Year's Eve is of little import, so that's not early.

We have one open spot, obviously.  Who wants to come and ring in the new year with us?

CAVEAT / FULL DISCLOSURE:  Santa Teresa is of no architectural significance in any way.  Oh I think it's a pretty decent course, and the greens are indeed wonderful.  But it has been raining and likely will between now and then, so who knows, conditions may suck.  It also tends to take forever to play there.  There will also be little if any post-round revelry as I for one will need to get home to watch USC battle Penn State with friends and family.  We will walk and we will play a skins game, for no day-altering money.

Interested?  IM me or email to huckaby72@yahoo.com .

If there's more interest than just one, well the 8:15 time is available as of right now.  But I hadn't anticipated this being anything but a friendly little foursome.

Mr. Huckaby,

I'd love to go, but sadly, I could never get there.

Sincerely,
Mr. Zeno

If only.
Maybe have a wee dram and think of Scottish pals, you guys.
I'd bet Santa Teresa has a couple of proscenium arches for one Thomas Huckaby... ;)

I dram will be consumed in each of your honor:  Jim, Martin, Tommy.  This could indeed be one hell of a round!

If there is no hanging out afterwards, I'm definately OUT.

Plus, who would want to play with a bunch of Broncos?

GOD IS A GAEL!

Huck,

I've seen your pics of Santa Teresa, and you do it a grave injustice when you say that it has no architectural interest.

Sometimes, utter simplicity is all that needs to be, and like beauty, is its own excuse for being.

What could possibly be added to improve it?  ;D

Dude,

I'd be tempted to come out of retirement for that one. That were the Kingster honed his game way back in the Renaissance Ages. Good memories.

Unfortunately I'm in the south with family -- including the grandchild.

In apologies for getting Combat corner wrong on the Bayonet thread: I think I'd like to name Santa Teresa's 11-12-13 hole stretch the "tug-of-war corner." My prediction: those three holes are going to be decide your match.

Cheers,
Dan King

JV it is!

Fantastic - this will be a lot of fun.

And Dan, we'll do it again when it gets warmer - we do need to lure you out of retirement.  Love the name for 11-13 at Santa Teresa, btw... yes those are the three most interesting holes, and can be the most difficult.

Mike:  it's all relative.  As I say, I love the course, for better or worse.  I'm just not going to sell it in here - where Merion is dissected worse than any high-school frog - as having any architectural signifcance. Can it be quite fun to play?  Yes.  Are there some interesting shots to be faced?  Yes.  Are you likely to face some putts that will be real head-scratchers or eye-openers?  Yes.  But it was designed by the great George Santana, in the 60s.  That should be 'nuff said for what I meant.

Jed:  football takes precedence on this day.   ;)

The first person to get on an airplane to play this course should be the first person to also check himself into the GCA insane asylum.

And re the football game that day, well... if there's one team I wouldn't mind losing to, it's Penn State... especially since the winner gets only the dubious honor of maybe finishing #3.  Still is is the Rose Bowl, and it must be won.  Fight on.

Not required, but a damn fine idea on days when it's wet.

What is required is this:  a viewing of the trophy case.

Cool, a tournament official and rules maven ...

John V.:  "Gentlemen, we all know this is illegal and against Club practice and I'd like to ask at this time if you all agree to waive all sanction against said referee or anything that might get me fired.   Lowest score wins the hole in regulation match play.  I have a number of tees in my hand.  Your Honor, odd or even?"

Huckaby:  "Odd"

John V:  "Odd, it is your honor, your Honor"

Benham:  "Hey tiger, here, keep it fair will you?"

Not sure which Bronco you are addressing that too, Tommy - but of course you are more than welcome to join us.  If you come, I will forfeit my playing spot and walk along as referee/ commentator.

Not that far south. I'm in the thriving metropolis of Cayucos. We even have Internet access here now. And just south in Morro Bay they are building a brand new Bob's Big Boy. Life don't get much sweeter. Who needs golf when I can soon get The Big Boy® Combo.

With all the recent stories of overweight Americans, fast food and quality cuisine, do you think they will produce a slimmer Big Boy statue/logo for the new locations?
