Philadelphia Lost Links, Part 3: Cedar Hollow (near Paoli)
« on: December 16, 2008, 03:32:00 PM »
I've had a bit of info on this course for months now but have been hoping to find more.  Today I did.  Cedar Hollow was a proposed 36 hole layout (Ed Clarey) that started in the fall of 1923.  Here is a January 13, 1924 article from the Public Ledger that I ran into this afternoon while Kyle Harris and I searched for interesting early golf articles and relived world history!  Note:  Cedar Hollow was one of the shortest existing clubs ever, I think.  By February of 1924 it was gone.  Shady financial dealings involved.  I'll post some of those articles later.

Joe - Very interesting stuff. Where exactly was this club to be located? I can't seem to determine it from this article.

Thanks Joe -- For some reason I thought it might be near what is now Waynesborough CC. I know there's a Mad Anthony Wayne house near the club. But I see it's north of Route 30, quite close to my house actually.

I'm not certain about this location.  I can't seem to find all the roads they talk about in the article.  Plus, the Lancaster Pike they are talking about is probably what is called Old Lancaster Ave now.  But that seems to terminate in Paoli.  I'm wondering if what is Paoli Pike now used to be Lancaster.  Perhaps some of our Philly veterans here can help out.

EDIT:  my friend Jim Hutchins sees there is a Green Tree via Google, and this is probably a better location.  This site would be real close to the current Waynesborough, and very close to the NLE Tredyffrin CC.

Here are a couple of articles talking about the collapse of Cedar Hollow.  Both are from the Evening Bulletin and courtesy of the Temple Urban Archives.
