I will be burned out. This surgery I just had will keep me out of playing for a while so my 08 year is done. I am going on he muni tour next year. Forget the top ranked courses that everyone knows about. I want play as many different courses next year as possible. For those of you in philly who have not been to Five Ponds lately ten you are missing something. Between all of those lucky rounds that I got in this year I prob. played 70 rounds at 5 ponds.
Thats my sleeper #11

The first ranked course I played was Royal County Down. I fancy the next was The Old Course. It's been downhill ever since....

One of my biggest concerns after being lucky enough to play Sand Hills was how do I ever enjoy a great experiance and not compare it to this?

While none top the list, any addition I make if fantastic. Leaterhstocking, Monroe...WHile not Sand Hills  they are very very enjoyable

I've never known much about the rankings. My original must play list came from The World Atlas of Golf, and the first one I played that I saw there was Banff. It's still in the top 10.

My first ranked course on any list would have been Franklin Hills when I was quite young maybe 12-13 Id say for my first 18.  It does not make my current Top 10 (stiff competition) but it holds a very special place in my heart and I would be extremely happy if I had to play there every day.

Current Top 10 List in alphabetical order:

Crystal Downs  (1997)
Friars Head  (2008)
National GL  (2008)
Oakmont  (2007)
Pacific Dunes  (2003)
Pine Valley  (2008)
Royal County Down  (2007)
San Francisco GC  (2006)
Sand Hills  (2007)
Shinnecock Hills  (2008)

Ari,

That is a heavy duty list.  From the photos I've seen on golfclubatlas, Friar's Head looks incredible.  Just curious, would you rank it in your top 3?

Friars Head is incredible.  I would rank it closer to 5 than 3.

For all you heavy hitters out there with the heavy duty top 10 lists:  How come I haven't seen Augusta National on one single list yet?  I would assume that atleast some of the people with the likes of CPC, Shinnecock, Pine Valley, National, etc on their lists may have also had the chance to play Augusta.  If that is the case, is it not a 10 ten among the greats?  If not, is it really that hard to get on (compared to the rest of the exclusive privates that I have seen on quite a few lists)?

Just curious

Thanks,

George

Let me answer the question this way....

The first "rated" course I ever played was Grand Cypress North/South/East, which had just hosted the World Cup prior to my visit.

I was excited for weeks in advance.

Is it still in my Top 10?

don't think so...

There are a lot of "heavy hitters" in here for sure in terms of getting to play famous/ranked/private golf courses... but that being said very very few in here have played Augusta.  I know Mucci has, and a few others... but I am pretty certain no one who has posted in this thread has played it.

I also feel certain that if any of us did, it would make the top 10.  Oh maybe not for some contrarians.  But I know damn well it would for me.

The first ranked course I played was Oak Hill East, in 1972. I still have fond memories of that round and the course, but the course is not in my top 10 now.

The first ranked course I played was Oakmont CC back in 1998 in a high school match.  I played it several more times through 1999 and you'll find it still firmly planted atop my top 10...I haven't played it since the major tree removal however, thus have doing so very high on my list of future endeavors for comparison purposes.  Grew up 10 min from there so Oakmont just feels like home.  Now live in Philadelphia (9 years) and I hope I don't start an interstate war by saying this but Philly definitely has a greater # of tremendous courses than the burgh having experienced both geographies.

My top 10:
1. Pine Valley (2008 - 38 degrees, 55mph wind and rain...good ol' nor easter)
1A. Oakmont (1998)
3.  Huntingdon Valley CC (2008)
4.  Bethpage Black (2008)
5.  Pinehurst #2 (2008)
6.  Cabo del Sol (2008)
7.  Saucon Valley Old (2008)
8.  Hidden Creek (2008)
9.  Harbour Town (1999)
10.  Galloway National (2008)

2008 was a good year for golf!

Honorable Mention:
Tobacco Road
Homestead Cascades
Seaview - Bay

I know I'm missing something...
