Unique Green

Has this green ever been duplicated?

   Is it an original?

Cruden Bay?

I've played something closely resembling it -- the 4th at Dunaverty, south of Machrihanish.

This is the tee shot -- a 162-yd par 3:

Garland,
Astoria is not even close to the punchbowl hole at Cruden Bay. z
Maybe Painswick #6?

Pete,

Closeness is relative. The punchbowl holes are nowhere as unique as the symmetrical deep troughs at Astoria. ;)

Pete,

Would you mean Painswick #5?

Anthony G. -

Your pictures are of the "bath tub" green (#14, I think)  at Cruden Bay.  When were those pictures taken? I thought I read that the ridge in front of the green has actually bit lowered a bit  in recent years.

The 5th hole, a short par-4, at Golspie (north of Dornoch) has a green site that is a similar. There is a ridge across the front of the green and on the right side of it. The left side of the green is guarded by a rock wall and the beach beyond it. Behind are two bunkers to catch shots that run thru the green.  From the fairway, only the top of an extra-tall flagstick is visible.

I wish I had a picture to post (and knew how to do so!).

  David,

The photos were taken 6 weeks ago at Cruden Bay. There is a thread now on how to post photos.

I am pretty sure the ridge in front of that green at Cruden Bay has been lowered a bit within the past year or two. It used to be even more of a blind shot into that green.

When I return to Golspie next May, I will take a picture of the #5 green there and post it for comparison.

I think this type of green is found reasonably frequently throughout many of the older UK courses, as mentioned Painswick has several perhaps even 5, 7, 8, 10... Burnham's 3rd the 3rd at Deal. I have even tried to recreate them although each green I guess is unique in its own way and the 14th at Cruden is unique in several ways I suppose.

  Adrian,

I wonder if the reason we do not see greens like these in the states is because of drainage issues.

I just thought of another very similar to the 14th at Cruden. I have not been there but isn't the 7th at Western Gailes samey? (perhaps I have the wrong course, but it is an Open final Qual one)

Does anyone know if the ridge in front of the #14 green has, in  fact, been lowered? Calling Frank Pont!

Brian:

A pretty decent pictorial review of Dunaverty from their website can be found here (front nine):

http://www.dunavertygolfclub.com/outwardnine/index.htm

and here (back nine):

http://www.dunavertygolfclub.com/inwardnine/index.htm

Dunaverty is an interesting course -- very short (4,800 from the tips) but some very good quirk and some great scenery on the southern tip of the Kintyre peninsula. It's pretty much unchanged from its beginnings 100 years ago -- to me, it felt almost like playing an antique golf course.

Frank will be able to answer in far more detail than I can but, having played Cruden Bay both before and after the recent changes, I thought the lowering of the ridge leading to the 14th green was barely discernable.  At least it was to my untutored eye!

A previous thread on the changes to the 14th is here http://golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,34086.0.html

Unfortunately on my browser Ian's photos are white spaces with a red cross.

Frank Pont is doing the GCA work at Cruden Bay. He did a Feature Interview here 6-12 months ago. He has done a lot of work on several of the links courses in Holland.

I don't think the 3rd at Burnham is the same at all.  There is a double dip short of the green and the it is a true punchbowl - collecting toward the middle from all sides.  Cruden Bay's green drifts from front to back, doesn't collect from the rear and has no dips to worry about carrying or running through.  Burnham's punchbowl is a truly unique version of the type.
