"North Berwick (pronounced BARR-ick)"

Is it really? I know the locals pronounce Gullane "Gillan" but I don't think I've ever heard this pronunciation of North Berwick

The way I heard it said locally, the "w" is silent.

Having spent quite a bit of time there the past three years, I think all of my associates would concur that the local pronunciation is "North BEAR-ick".

I'd say North BEH-rick, and you'd say North BEAR-ick
I'd say near GILL-ane, you'd say near GULL-ane
North BEAR-ick, near GULL-ane,
North BEH-rick, near GILL-ane
Ach, let's just play some gowf......

Depending on if you like to spell like Tom or Rihc, both are right.  I'll go for Bare (gotta keep the silent e cause Brits lovem')-icke (why not chuck another silent e in?)

Next to antimetabole humor, is there anything better than an open syllabication joke?

In the spirit of Kumbaya, and to birng it back on topic, let's compromise on "North BEHR-ick."

Smithwick's Irish red ale is the same, drop the W. Correction pronunciation is either "Smithick's" or "All Mass-Produced American Beer Sucks."

In troubled times go back to firth principles...pronunciation and course alike will be water under the bridge.
