DUPONT - How Did I Misss it?

I was just rolling through the My Home Course section as I do periodically.  What do I find?  I new course has been profiled by Cory Lewis - Dupont.  I don't recall any announcement which if there wasn't one is a pity.  Its quite a good writeup and deserves some attention.

Thanks for the kind words Sean, as I'm sure you know it was great fun writing the profile.  The GAP Magazine actually just wrote a brief history of DuPont Country Club in there most recent issue.  Here is the link. Pages 8 and 9

The changes at DuPont were very well conceived and it's a significantly better course than it was prior.

The back nine in particular is quite superb, and Lester wasn't afraid to take some chances either, as witnessed by the controversial 2nd green.

My only disappointment is that I didn't think the double fairway on the 18th hole worked very well.   In future playings, I wouldn't see the point of trying to go left from the tee.

All in all though, a really fine job.

For me the hole forces to player into urgency. It's not so much a question of better option down the left or right, but how the central hazard messes with a line off the tee. The left side isn't nearly as difficult to hit or play from with a slight miss than is readily apparent.

Mike, the left fairway works well because the risk in taking the line is rewarded with a much shorter club into the green, the angle from the left can be a little more difficult, but with deep bunkers in front of the green it's about the same as the right.  The green itself is very hard to hold and has probably the most severe greenside rough on the course so you want to have as short a club as possible into it.

We ended up playing Green-Black and I'm exhausted - we played 18 on the Black in total darkness (even when you can't see the hole, it's still bad).

I read that again and I'm not even sure... I think I miss a few conjunctions and verbs.

Basically, the left side doesn't look all that appealing from the tee. However, even missing the fairway down the left side leaves a very short approach - so depending on the condition of the rough it's not all that bad of an angle to come in from.

I hit my tee shot right down the middle and just carried the creek. I don't know if being further right than that would have been all that appealing. To me, challenging the creek or going left is still worth it.

I would respectfully disagree based on my single playing experience. 

The view from the left side is over a mine-field of bunkers and you're approaching the green at its shallowest angle.   The shot is both uphill and mostly blind.

I looked it over a bit and think the best play is to try and drive it as far down the right side as possible, leaving a straight uphill second up the throat of the green between the fronting bunkers.   The visibility and angle seemed much preferable to me.

Deft pitches over bunkers never scare me or Cory. I've seen your wedge play.

...so three different types of golfers have three different takes on a hole.

And yes, we must get back to play the Red before the year is through.

 I would plant an additional tree to support the eventual death of the tree on #18 .

   As one who grew up playing there I can say that the old way left you with only one smart move --stay away from the water on the left. Now, you can try to get over the water. I'm fine with the bunker and blindness challenge because you have shortened the shot significantly.

   You have an option now and I think the reduced length of the second shot will atttract many to go for it.
