Pinehurst ~ Home of American Golf
« on: August 15, 2008, 11:25:11 AM »
In celebration of the U.S. Amateur, the book award, and just due to the fact that my wife is clamoring for a room back, I want to extend this offer for my book exclusively to GCAers:

From now until September 1st, I'm offering a personalized copy of Pinehurst ~ Home of American Golf (The Evolution of a Legend) for $55.00 and that includes shipping within the United States only.  Please just e-mail me at richardmandell@golf-architecture.com and we will then send you a request for payment through paypal or arrange other payment options if needed.  Don't go to through my website, because it will charge you full price.

Thanks again or the nice comments regarding the award!

My parents have a house in Pinehurst so I got my dad a copy of the book for Christmas last year. He loved it and read it cover to cover in a couple of days. I've only had the chance to read the first five or six chapters but have thoroughly enjoyed it. The current aerials with the center lines of where the holes used to run is my favorite part.

For anyone who has been to Pinehurst and is an architecture fan (you wouldn't be reading this if you weren't) this book is a must have!  I bought one for my Dad last Dec. and ordered another for myself 5 minutes after getting the first one.  $55 is a steal for a book of this quality, plus Richard donates money to the Tufts Archives in Pinehurst for every copy sold.  I would hope people will pay the extra $10 that he's asking for a signed copy.

Pat Craig: you probably mean well, but do you really want to rub Richard's face in the mud? Try and grasp the concept of "Big Man" staying up 100 to 150 nights over the course of the project until 3.00 am—pouring his heart into this publication at a cost of 50,000 to 100,000—just to have you point out that it’s possible to save a lousy $10 on Amazon. His marriage would have been conducted via correspondence, if at all. Amazon's investment in Rich's research, development, photographic, production, printing expenses was absolutely ZERO. The book was written specifically so that people like you and other GCA-ers would be supportive of his efforts, being the primary market. It’s a free world mate, but your backhanded compliment to Richard Mandell stinks!

Pat

IM me your mailing address and I'll send you a check for the $10 difference so you can go the Mandell route and dump Amazon.  No questions asked.

To others planning on the Amazon route: this offer stands for the next 15 to contact me, too -- $10 to dump Amazon and take Mandell's offer instead. No questions asked, just on your honor as a fellow GCA.com member that you were planning to buy from Amazon.

Mark

PS Pat, my first thought was to go Harvey Keitel on you from the diner scene in "Reservoir Dogs," replacing "waitress" with "writer" in the script, but lots of people wouldn't have bothered to post their intentions.  They just would have gone over to Amazon and done it.

I almost bought this book off Amazon about two months ago.  Now I am glad I waited.

I am hoping Richard will contact me about buying this book, I fully intend to pruchase one of them. Mark, thanks, but your $10 is not needed.

Pat Craig-You comment, while certainly not one of the meanest comments I have seen on here, might certainly be one of the most disrespectful. I trust you know that Richard said he would sign the book and ship it for $55? If you go with Amazon, I hope they charge you $11 to ship it just so you lose out on the deal.

Now you're economizing. Lord knows in this economy we need to watch our pennies.  So here's another tip: you could pull in a healthy $4-$5 putting your reputation up for sale on eBay!

Mr. Craig probably buys his clubs at Pro Discount Golf after demoing them from his local pro.

Richard,

This works perfect. I was just comped $55 on a green fee this week, and I had some weird GCA/Barney guilt that I was going to accused of being a rater or worse. I will send you a IM with my details. Please send me a Paypal request and I will take care of it when I get back to my PC at home.

Wow...very weak.

Anyways, I already have a copy of RM's book, and I think it deserves any and all accolades.

It is one of the main reasons that I'm itching to see the less-important courses at the resort, #1,3,5-7.

For all the research and info inside (and it takes a while to put it all together in your head), it's worth more than $55.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Can I get mine personalized as follows?

"Dear Tiger:

Sorry I missed you and Ed at Torrey.  But I trust we can all catch up at the annual get together at the Odens.  Until then, good luck with the knee rehab.

Your good friend,

Rich"

Richard:

What a wonderful book!  My husband and I purchased a copy so that we could read it prior our brief visit to the US Am this week.  I cannot begin to tell you how much that book enhanced our trip.  Monday, we spent the day on #2, Tuesday on #4  and back to #2 for Wednesday and yesterday.

We are scheduled to return in October to actually play.

Very, very well done.  An outstanding book!  All kudos are well-deserved!

Mine arrived Friday, just in time to enjoy it over the weekend with the Am broadcasts. Thanks, it's a terrific book.
