Does nobody check the weather stats...
« on: August 07, 2008, 05:54:03 PM »
...when they award the majors to these courses?

I'm fed up giving Sky Sports money for nothing.

Please someone have  a word and move the majors to more temperate locales.

As if Scotland is temperate ::)
-No matter where you have a tournament in August, there will be chances for storms, at least in America.

I guess you can't get the US Women's Am currently on the Golf Channel.  I don't know what it is about Oregon but it makes even the most average woman look hot.  Now I understand why Kurt Cobain fell for Courtney Love...The Oregon effect.   Even stretches to Seattle I suppose.

JKM,
we only host THE OPEN every five years in July (which is the best possible month weatherwise to do ANYTHING in Scotland!!!)
 ;D
The USA has an entire CONTINENT to choose from with probably more climate zones than the rest of the planet combined. Go temperate, baby.

Where would be the place in the States with the best ALL YEAR ROUND climate to host the uninterruptible majors?

Martin--There is nowhere that you can do that. Florida is too hot and high chance of storms this time of year. Arizona will be too hot. North Carolina has high chance of storms (just had a fairly bad one today) California has chance of storm as evidenced by Pebble Beach in 2000. Texas is likely too hot as well. So, we're running out of places with good weather to have events. Pennsylvania and New York are good, but they can only have so many events, assuming the golf courses even want to host them anymore. I mean, nearly anywhere is the US is going to have chance of bad weather this time of year.

Unlike tennis, the golf majors aren't run year round (unless the Australian Open becomes a major) so you really only need an April through October window.

And the answer to the question is Northern California ... ;)

JKM,
or can I call you JakaM?  :o
That amazes me! There you are with a land mass more than 20 or 30 or 40? times ours and you can't find 200 acres that won't be storm-battered, snow-covered or rain-lashed for a week a year to hold a perfect golf tournee?
Shurley shome mishtake?

always with the sensible NCalifornian retort!!!
This is why we love the climatic blandness of your home area!
ALL majors to the West Coast!!

I can't believe what I am reading; Scots, complaining bout inclement weather?  Scots?  SCOTS?

OHCC's weather for the Ryder cup was near-perfect.

If you go to any US regional website and look at the radar scan for southeast Michigan, you'll see that the showers are widely scattered.  We've had blue skies for much of today.  This will blow out soon.

When was the last time the Open Championship suffered a weather delay?

You guys don't have lightning.

That said, one smart-aleck answer to your question could be; "The second round this year, on the back nine, with four or five groups waiting on the tee..."

But a more serious answer would include the following:

1938 Royal St George's
Tents were blown into the Channel and other material flew on to fairways as high winds swept the south coast

1961 Royal Birkdale
Friday's play was cancelled altogether after high winds made the course unplayable

1970 St Andrews
Thunder storms halted Tony Jacklin after an outward nine of 29 shots on Thursday; he returned on Friday to complete his round in 67

1988 Royal Lytham
Sunday's play was aborted because of flooding on the course, with Seve Ballesteros claiming victory a day later

1998 Royal Birkdale
A half-hour delay on Friday after wind meant players were unable to mark their golf balls correctly

Chance of a storm at Pebble in 2000?  Did I miss something?  I think the only weather oddity that particular week was that the sun actually came out...

August in Washington, Oregon or California is the way to go.

Scott--Storm delay of Fog delay? I can't remember. But either way, there was a weather delay during the 2000 US Open.

The other option is that the Americans could build golf courses that are fun, interesting, challenging and playable in bad weather. ;)

David-I don't think ANY  courses are playable in dense fog or a lightning storm. Especially not playable for me in the case of a lighting storm

I live in Australia.  We prefer to have played called off on days of perfect weather, due to hole locations devised by incompetent morons.

I expect that there have been less weather delays in the Open Championship in the last seventy years than in any of  the Masters, US Open or PGA Championship.  In a golfing context, I think its quite reasonable for Martin to complain about your weather!

Since Rome and New York are on the same latitude, and golf is regarded as a summer game,we don't have so many options when we leave the very few miles cooled by the Pacific. Lightning makes Colorado tough. Was anybody having fun at the PGA in Tulsa last year?

What Mr. Bonnar conveniently ignores is the fact that it has been raining 40 days and 40 nights here in Scotland, including a full blown thunderstorm last weekend.  If I don't spot a dove today I'm going to start looking for some retirement properties in Detroit.

Speak for yourself, O Honorary Fifer ;)

I think I may have been frustrated by the ramblings of a certain idiot-boy commentator yesterday. A situation which has been merely furthered by the stream of drivel we are enduring this evening.

Dear Lord, please let Setanta win the next round of bids for coverage of the majors in the UK. I promise I will be a good boy and cease the naughtiness forthwith. A-aaa-aa-a-a-a-men......

Go Sergio.

Idiot-Boy: "No, I think it was Elvis Costello".

There is a PERFECT place to hold late summer tournaments - Pacific Northwest!!!

Between June and October, the weather here is between mid-60's and mid-80's with low humidity. With plenty of sun and low days of rain and almost no chance of a thunderstorm (we had one this whole summer so far in Seattle).

There is no better summer weather ANYWHERE in the US.
