O/T Course Marshalls
« on: August 07, 2008, 05:23:54 PM »
This from the obit of a rough and tumble English cricketer, Butch White.

After retirement,

"He moved to West Sussex, and worked as a golf marshal at Mannings Heath, where his duties included the enforcement of green fees. It would have been a rash visitor who refused to pay."

I bet he kept it to  a three hour round as well.

Yes, indeed, 3 hours to play. If only all courses enforced a 3 hour round ::)

How's that!?            Sounds a bit like a rough and tumble baseball player, except, at least, the baseball players have a go at each other once in which on a 'wild' pitch.  Can't remember ever being intimidated by the size of an opposing cricketer.

Henry E. How old are you?

Did you play cricket without  a helmet and face mask?

Go back to the thirties test match Series between Australia and England and learn about the "Body Line strategy."

The West Indies sides at one time could intimidate anyone.

No face masks and growing up, we didn't wear gloves until our senior years at high school.  Never heard of the 'body line strategy', but I remember some bowlers that could hit their target pretty well if you weren't ready for it.

For anyone who has played cricket and doesn't know much of its history this is a must read.

This caused a diplomatic row of unimaginable proportions.

And not just because "the bowler's Holding; the batsman's Willey."

Brings back some fine memories and I have sent it to my Dad who will just laugh his chops off at these. Thankyou for the link. If you have any more please let me know. As for the Body line series, Harold Jardine et al - wonderful. I remember watching a series on TV about it - great viewing.
