Bob Huntley brought up in the "One course for the rest of your life" thread the possibility of a MPCC Composite Course.

Obviously, it'd need shuttles (but it'd start right off a "main road" and end up at the MPCC Shore halfway house), but doing the math/work on looking at this course, I SERIOUSLY can't think of a better combination of golf holes that I'd more want to play....

There is every type of hole--every type of Par 3, every type of Par 4, every type of Par 5--all along the glorious Pacific Ocean.

The course comes out to a Par of 73, by no means strange in today's modern game.  If a Par 72 is needed or desired, The "first" hole (#9, Dunes) could easily be played as a long 4 par from the forward tees.

1. 9th Hole, MPCC Dunes--Par 5 (short reachable Par 5)

2. 10th Hole, MPCC Dunes--Par 3 (short Par 3)

3. 11th Hole, MPCC Dunes--Par 4 (short Par 4)

(Looking back to tee)

4. 12th Hole, MPCC Dunes--Par 4 (long Par 4)

5. 13th Hole, MPCC Dunes--Par 5 (medium length Par 5)

6. 14th Hole, MPCC Dunes--Par 3 (medium length)

Tee Shot

Bailout area and Green

7. 15th Hole, MPCC Dunes--Par 5 (long)

8. 8th Hole, MPCC Shore--Par 4 (medium)

Tee Shot

Second shot (at dogleg)

9. 9th Hole, MPCC Shore--Par 3 (long)

Par 36 Front 9

10. 10th hole, MPCC Shore--Par 5 (reachable)

11. 11th hole, MPCC Shore--Par 3 (mid iron)

Video, listen to the wind!

12. 12th hole, MPCC Shore--Par 5 (Long)

13. 13th hole, MPCC Shore--Par 4 (short)

14. 14th hole, MPCC Shore--Par 3 (long-ish iron)

15. 15th hole, MPCC Shore--Par 4 (medium length)

16. 16th hole, MPCC Shore--Play as par 4 from forward tee (long)

Looking back at tee:

17. 5th Hole MPCC Shore--Par 4 (Play as risk/reward hole driveable hole from forward tee)

18. 6th Hole, MPCC Shore--Par 5 (mid length, may be reachable)

2nd shot:

Par 37 Back 9

Sure, I can think of better individual holes, but I literally cannot think of a better combination of golf holes over 18 holes?

You might be correct... my only problem is what does MPCC stand for?  :o

Jed,

I followed the routing using google maps and I think that works really well.  The snack shack at the 18th hole (6th Shore) would be a great place to end the round, take it all in, and have a drink or two.

Even the shuttle ride from the clubhouse to the 1st tee (9 Dunes) isn't that bad.  And if your feeling frisky, you can borrow Bobs automated golf cart and have a nice warmup walk down there....  ;)

Kalen:

I'm sure it would be possible there on an "off" day, for sure.

Last time I played there (on a monday) we went off around 8:50 on dunes, and the next group went off at 12:30 on shore!

Bob,

You going to give it a try?  I'm sure you can head out there on Tuesday morning or something when the course is relativly empty!  If you need a marker, please don't hesitate to PM me.   ;D

Kalen:

You can just start at 1 on dunes, play the rota, and then don't stop once you get around shore! keep it going....

That'd be a lot of holes...

Yeah,

That'd be a bit too much considering the run down neigherboorhood and views I'd be subjected to!!  8) ;)

If shuttle rides are no problem, how would a Pebble/CPC composite course work out?

Jim:

Unless I'm missing the sarcasm, you are attempting to be "witty".

MPCC is a consistent routing, it just starts and ends about a half mile walk away from each other. Same property, same club.

Jed, Great pictures! Fond memories for me of 2 very special trips to MPCC this year.I am unable to chose which of the two courses I favor.  Not only are the holes scenic and diverse but impeccably maintained. What a place to enjoy life's journey.  Thanks again to my very gracious host- Jack

Nice work, Jed. Excellent photos.

That really world be a world class course. It captures most of the highlights from each current layout. I haven't played the Dunes course (I have played the Shore), but I walked it during last year's Cal Amateur. The oceanside holes on both courses played much tougher than their inland brethren, thanks to stiff winds. Thus, this composite course would be a stern test (for mortals) on stormy days.

Jed,

Thanks for making the effort to show what I had in mind. Great photos and narrative.

I have suggested this idea to our committee and it might happen.

Bob:

Hopefully you folks can make it happen, if only for a couple "fun" rounds, tournament, etc. etc.

I think it'd be a BLAST to play--6 par 5s, 7 par 4s, 5 par 3s!

How much fun would that be!?

Bob

Many years ago (pre-restoration/construction/drainage,) we used to play a similar 'winter' route on the old courses-

9 through 15 Dunes
13 through 15 Shore
5 through 12 Shore
Par 38/34/72

I know there was a small number of members who did the same, so the idea is not a stretch.  It's basicaly the same concept, just playing counter-clockwise on the Shore now.

Good luck in pursuing this.  Maybe difficult to find a better composite course anywhere.

Scott
