DuPont Country Club Course Profile has been posted

My write-up of the renovation of DuPont Country Club has been posted.

http://golfclubatlas.com/dupont.html

Many thanks to Ran and Ben for making this happen.  It has been a tremendous experience writing about what a fantastic job Lester George did transforming DuPont.  Many thanks to Lester and John Gosselin for their time and help with this project.  I encourage everybody on this site to take the time to do a my home course profile.  It is a very rewarding experience.

I also want to apologize for the poor grammar.   I am not a writer but I tried my best.

Cory,

Thanks for this. I think it is the best renovation I have ever seen. I always felt that the DuPont course was the weakest of the four growing up there. Now it is great fun.

I was a member at Dupont CC in the early 90's, when I worked for a Dupont joint venture.  I had posted pics of Lester's work at Dupont several times in the past, and this is certainly more thorough.

You'll notice in the 'before' pic of #1, the cart path ran between then fairway and the fairway bunker on the left!

I agree with Michael, the Dupont course was always the snoozer of the (3 'full size') courses at Dupont CC, despite it hosting the McDonald's LPGA Championship for several years.  This one might be as good as (the former Louviers course) Deerfield now!   ;)

Nice profile of the renovation.  I think it's great to see both the before & after photos for many of the holes.  I can only imagine how much more fun it is to play now.

How long is the 15th hole?   Is there room to miss short on the green side of the creek?  I'm not a huge fan of forced layup shots on par 4s unless you hit in a bunker or really botch the tee shot.

I second Mayday's opinion - this is the best renovation I've ever seen.  (OK - TPC Boston is way up there too, but I've never seen it in person.  I played "Dupee" before and after the renovation)

John - there's definitely room short of the green.   I know - I skulled my 8 iron up there.

I think 15 and 18 are triumphs of the highest order.  15 was a boring par 4, and now it's a very strategic, challenging hole.   18 was always tough, but now it's exciting too.  You can choose how much of the creek you want to bite off.

Cory's so cool he had an eagle 3 on the 9th and didn't realize it till I congratulated him!

PS - Cory - is there a template we should use when writing a "My Home Course"?

  Cory,

I found #2 and #15 to be better greens than most in their prerenovation state. They had a little more subtlety than #1 or #4 , for example. As for #8 , I think they might actually have reduced the slope in the new version. I recall it as extremely difficult.

Cory,

Nice job on the write-up.  DuPont should be proud of the work you do for them.

As you know, Beth Daniel returned in June to play the "new" course and personally called me to give me her feedback.  I am pleased to report that she thought is was much better and specifically like the 2nd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 15th, 18th holes.

Lester,

I belong to an Alfred Tull course on Long Island and was fascinated to see so many familiar features in the Dupont profile.  Let me ask you for your opinion on one particular design trait that seems to generate the most comments from members and guests alike about my home course.  The distance between the greenside bunkers and the putting surface seems to be very pronounced on our course and from the pictures of Dupont it looks like you maintained this design feature.  Am I wrong, or was this particular to Tull?

Higher handicappers seem to have trouble with this, it's hard enough for them to get the ball out of the trap and if they don't carry it far enough they face another tough shot from some pretty deep thick rough greenside.

Do you know if Tull had any specific thoughts on this?

Thanks

Jeff

I was fortunate to play the DuPont Course at DuPont CC last Sunday.  Rather than start a new thread, I'll bump this one started by Cory and add my photo album (with hole diagrams):

Enjoy!

Joe:

Great photos. Best I've seen.

I'm a member at DuPont - if anyone wants to see the course(s) in person, drop me a line. I'm happy to host.

I hope to be back to the Nemours course in a couple of weeks.  Perhaps you will be available and I can bring along my laptop and 'sample' the photos off your card.   ;)

I also shot the Montchanin course last Sunday:

I did get to play the Nemours course at Dupont last weekend.  Here are the pics to prove it:

 ;)

I know there is a master plan around by Lester George for Nemours.  Perhaps it will be implemented some day....

Wow - the ground level pics for the Nemours course look so much better than the overheads. The course looks quite nice in the photo tour with some decent ground movement and some nice looking green complexes. The aerials make it look rather bland.

The terrain is pretty good, Jim.  Apparently the master plan for the Nemours is pretty good.  If I get a copy of it, I'll update this thread.

The Nemours course provides a rather nice compliment to the mostly flat DuPont course. It is quite hilly as compared to the rest of the property.
