Last I knew knee length shorts and coordinating high socks were still de riguer in Bermuda even for evening wear with a colorful blazer and tie. A very classy look for the island.

"Despite the lore, I have never seen anyone parading around shirtless at Bob O' Link for any real length of time.  There's an occasional guy getting out of the shower, wrapped in a towel, and grabbing a drink at the bar, then going back to the locker room to get dressed,  but that's it.  The lore is more about what could be done, rather than actual practice."

In my only visit to Bob O' Link we were, during pre-round lunch, treated to the sight of a shirtless old guy dropping trou outside the window of the men's grill to urinate (he apparently didn't want the guys on the course to see him, so we got to see that), followed by two naked guys plopping down at the next table, with towels on the seats thank God, to eat.  It may be legend, but it's 100% of my visits. . .

garden city allows shorts, as does winged foot. garden city does, however, famously require a jacket (but no other clothing) in the bar.

Before Bob O had houses around part of the grounds, playing there consisted of men that infrequently would wear as little as they wanted.  But the stories live on and on hot days caddies still run around w/o a shirt on.  Around the clubhouse, it can be a free-for-all...

I don't know of any place in Texas that does.  Given the heat, it would be difficult to keep play...

While shorts at Wade Hampton in North Carolina brings someone rushing from the golf shop to the car.

John, so true.  The cabin I stayed in bordered the course.  I was actually nervous someone might complain about me wearing shorts on the back porch!  Fortunately, the cool temperatures usually make the pants only rule a non-factor.

Pants only flies at Garden City Golf Club.  As long as you are not in view of the clubhouse it is okay to play with your shirt off.

Wrong on the former!

What?  Are you saying you can only take your shirt off if you have shorts on?  I can't imagine someone going shirtless and wearing pants, but the thread was titled Pants Only and GCGC is the only place (other than a raggedy-ass mune) where I can think of where that's okay.

Shorts have long been permissable. The shirt off rule is mostly tied to a singular and past incident and likely a bit more myth than reality.

Yes, I know shorts are permissable.  I wore them when I played there.  The shirt off was no myth; I saw it firsthand.

Can you name another respectable course that allows pants only like Garden City?

I can't.

If I'm not mistaken, these places also require shirts to go along with the pants. A pants only requirement would be perfect for a Daly design.

 ;D

Jeff, I know for certain shirts are not required on the course at Garden City and it sounds like Bob O'Link too.

so the list of "pants only" clubs at this point looks like:

cypress point
lacc
bel air
mpcc
san francisco gc
burning tree

very interesting that most of these are west coast clubs which i usually known for being less stuffy than the east coast clubs.  i suppose it doesn't get as hot on west coast (at least at these courses) as it does on the east so no one has probably ever challenged the need for shorts.

Chip, Fiddler's Elbow in New Jersey requires long pants (or doesn't allow shorts).  They have 54 holes and one course is a very good one designed by Rees Jones.

Add that to a list of no-shorts clubs.

when i mentioned burning tree, it was in response to the query regarding respectable clubs that allowed you to play shirtless. to clarify, burning tree does allow you to play in shorts.

Chip,

You can add California Golf Club to the "pants only" list.  For certain.  It is usually perfectly comfortable given the steady afternoon costal breeze and SF temperatures.

Caves Valley was long pants only from opening day on - have they relaxed?

I wore long pants at NGLA in September, don't think I saw anybody in shorts.  Was that just a coincidence.?
