How do you rate the architects? Part 1, The Golden Age
« on: July 21, 2008, 02:44:09 PM »
I'm not really a "rankings" guy, but I'd be curious how the group "rates" the following list of architects from the golden age. While most have not played even one course of some these men, do the best you can. List them from "best to least" and perhaps use the Doak scale to give them a numerical rating on their own as well. This list is totally subjective. I left off architects such Fownes, Wilson, Crump, Leeds, Egan, Macbeth, Macan, PM Ross etc due to a personal opinion of not having a large enough body of work to fairly compare them to these others. I'd like to do a post WWII rating as well after this one plays out.  In no particular order from myself:

Alister MacKenzie

H.S. Colt

A.W. Tillinghast

Donald Ross

George Thomas

William Flynn

Perry Maxwell

C.B. Macdonald

Seth Raynor

Stanley Thompson

Herbert Fowler

C.H. Alison

Billy Bell

Tom Simpson

Tom Morris

James Braid

Walter Travis

Devereux Emmet

Willie Park, jr.

Herbert Strong

Willie Watson

Max Behr

William Langford

Alex Findlay

Here are my top 10, in no particular order.

1.  Flynn
2.  Crump
3.  Wilson
4.  Flynn and Wilson
5.  Wilson and Flynn
6.  Crump and Wilson
7.  Wilson and Crump
8.  Flynn and Crump
9.  Crump and Flynn
10.Flynn, Wilson, and Crump

Is ten enough, or should I keep going?
Golf history can be quite interesting if you just let your favorite legends go and allow the truth to take you where it will.

Am I asking too much on this?

Who cares?  They all have some respectable work.  There are so many variables.  Site, budget, and most importantly how their work has been maintained over the past 70 years.

I think Ross, Mackenzie, and Tillinghast would be the likely consensus (not unanimous, so no need to correct me) Top 3 and Flynn and MacDonald are probably just behind.  How much work do you need to do to register, and are we judging by how good an average course was or just the best? Ross designed 400.  And how do you compare U.K. and U.S. workers?  My list was thinking only of American courses.

What is your list?  You haven't shared that yet.
