I played West Point GC back in June while visiting relatives in northern Jersey. I wasn't expecting much, but what an enjoyable round of golf. Not a long course by anyone's standards, quite a few elevated tee boxes, many small greens, and some tough and tight holes. Originally a RTJ Jones, it was re-worked in the mid to late 1990's. Does anyone know who completed the work??? I am thinking the downhill #16 par 3 is a newer hole as it doesn't appear to match up with the rest of the course. I would be interesting to know what exactly was altered during the redesign....Here are some pics...

What a great collection !  Did you dream up the filing system ?  Do you mind if I try and copy your work ?  I'm so disorganized with my photos.

Actually, I was too lazy to create real web pages, as it is very time consuming.....when you have 4 kids under 6, time is of the essence!

West Point is a legitimate test, that plays longer than the scorecard, especially if you're walking. The green speeds are far above the average public golf course.  With the exception of the 5th and 6th holes the course has some really interesting and original character to it.

If you know any golfers in any branch of the military (Active or retired), take them along for a nice discount.

*Note to self - Get back to west point GC.

Nice pics.

Mike,

Weekday price of $53 with a cart extremely affordable for the NYC area. I am a vet, and didn't get a discount. I think active duty pays less than $15 to play.

Front is walkable, back is as well, but from the 9th to the 10th tee is a jaunt over the bridge and then from the 15th green back over the green and up the hill thru the woods to the 16th, then back down.

This course would be an excellent play in the fall, with the colorful foliage.

PS: The greens looked average, but the ball rolled very quickly on them. They were FAST without being "shaved down" like on other courses...excellent greens.

I can't remember who did the redesign (nor could I find it on line), but the course was closed for two years (I think 1994-5).   I want to say Arthur Hills, but it wasn't him.  As I remember, it was some guy from Virginia or North Carolina -- not a big name but one that would be recognizable (i think he's also no longer living).

For what was accomplished during the renovation, I don't know why the course remained closed for two years.  I think all the fairways and greens were re-seeded.  The greenside pond in front of the par 5 seventh was extended so a carry over water is required.  Strategic options are limited as it  is near impossible to go for the green in two-- even with a great drive, players must lay up with a 6 iron or so -- thus making it the 2nd worst par 5 I have ever played (with the worst being #10 at Balamor in NJ).

The tee on 14 was moved.  The old hole was a blind dog leg left to a down hill - punchbowl-like green.  The new tee is elevated and replaces the dog leg with an awkward and somewhat difficut down hill drive-- a 3 wood is probably the correct play there.

As the previous poster noted, the downhill par 3 sixteenth is a new hole.  The current driving range is the old 16th.  It used to be a short par 4 (300 yards or so) just as you crossed over route 218 and played back toward the club house.

While short at just over 6,000 yards, it does play a bit longer.  Without doubt the hilliest course i have ever played.

The architecture is pretty good given the terrain -- I have played the course about 20 times, but not since 2005 -- I can only remember one "cookie cutter" RTJ hole -- that being the par3 eleventh hole.

Remarkably, in the group behind us, a cadet, who was on the Army golf team actually eagled that par 5! His approach held the green in 2 and he sank the putt. Unbelievable, as that green is TINY minus the false front.

I wonder if Arthur L. Davis did the redesign? He added a newly designed course at Fort Jackson right about the time I was getting out of the Army in 1992. Unless of course the gov't was spreading the wealth....

It might have been Joe Lee.
