Curious to see what folks make of this, Do you like it, dislike it, why?
(Personally, I like the pic, but haven't played the hole)

I was thinking...is this a trick question??

Sometimes designing nothing can be better than turning something good into something worse right?

'nocheating.jpg'. Levett, you are a genius!!! ;)

Hard to tell from the slightly elevated view, but, so far, I'm liking it. Need more detail of length, playing direction, etc, etc to make any realistic judgement...

Effers.

Is this the new green at the par 5 17th at Royal Birkdale?

Martin
It's a par 5, seen from the left. The wind may be both favouring and against during any four days.
Edit: Yes, Pete got it. A lot of negative comment in the British media.

I played the hole and thought the green was severe but super interesting.  The hole is reachable and should give the guys a lot of fun.  You can be on the fringe and take three to get down.

Gathering bunkers around a green are unusual - are they not?

I would assume the scallopping around the back...looks bad to me as well, but this is all I can see.

is it b/c its out of character with the rest of the course or b/c they don't think it is fair.  if its a reachable par 5, then the green should be penal.

This Hawtree's work? Apparently he bluffed his way into the Lahinch job on account of his 2 holes work here  ::)

Looks pretty normal to me. Good challenging green.
It looks large enough that if you are used to links golf, you should be able to get and keep it on the right level.

Gotta agree with JES that back of the green does not tie in "naturally" with the dunes behind it. I didn't notice it at first because I was looking at the bunkers and the green contours but on second glance it is pretty amateurish - a bunch of repeated waves.

I'm with JES, but I suspect that in the newly established K Club tradition, mediocre design might still make for fun TV on the weekend.

You know SteveK, those three little depressions may be able to be used as three little putting green water hazards. If George Thomas could put a bunker in the middle of a green why shouldn't we have at least one example of little water hazards immediately next to putting green space? I think those three little depressions are quite brilliant but the idiots forgot to plug them up and put water in them. Matter of fact, if the water level was constantly maintained at about 2-3 inches think of the cool options. You could take Rule 26 relief or the other option would be to try to play out of the shallow water. I think golfers might love that----eg they could sort of act like birds playing in a bird bath. I was thinking about another option of teeny little ball sized drop zones but on second thought that seems like a really stupid idea.
