Loudest sound on a golf course
« on: June 27, 2008, 12:39:17 PM »
Recalling Tiger's ace at the 1997 Phoenix Open I thought I'd ask you all to share the loudest sounds or roars you've ever heard on a golf course.

I heard the sound barrier being broken while playing a round at The Links at Sierra Blanca in New Mexico.  Not as cool as the Tiger roar.

Me screaming "BBBBBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOBBBBBBBBBBB!!!!!" as my shanked 5-iron sailed within a few feet of Bob Huntley's head at #16 on his home course comes to mind.

I have not been there yet myself, but I have heard the noise of the RAF fighter jets landing & taking off next to the Moray Old (Lossiemouth) course is quite deafening.

The air show of European Air Force planes at RAF Leuchars across the Eden from The Old Course. Some of these jets fly so low it seems as though a solid eight iron might bring one down. The noise is deafening.

Loud AND persistent is the golf course at 'My Old Kentucky Home' SP, where they play the song {MOKH} on very loud bells for hours on end. Is especially deafening on holes #10 - #12.

If the question was "most sounds on a golf course", for me the winner by a country mile would be the Royal Regina Golf Club. It is located beside an airport and a rail line, as well as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police training academy. During one round some years ago, there were planes, trains and automobiles (police interceptor vehicles squealing through an obstacle course) to be heard, plus a marching band practicing and firearms being discharged at a target range. Can anyone beat that?

I have played a couple courses that are near airports and they are really loud.  If you have never had the privilege of standing on a tee or green and heard the noise from a commerical jet or the mother of them all the big Air National Guard refueling planes the sound and jet wash swirling winds that comes from these planes is amazing.  The loudest noise ever has to be 2 F-16's dog fighting chasing each other going about 500 mph over a golf course I was playing near Destin, Florida at an elevation of about 5,000 above our heads.  It was down right scary as hell because we never heard them coming and they were over us in seconds.

I'm pretty sure I have you all beat.

During a high school match in 1983, the Concorde flew directly over the course on its way to Dulles airport.  It wasn't supersonic at the time, but it was low, and it was LOUD.

This was at either Poolesville or Laytonsville golf course.  I forget which.

The warning horn to signal an upcoming thunderstorm and lightning while you are over a 4 ft birdie putt is pretty loud
I need a nickname so I can tell all that I know.....

Wasn't there for that one, but Mickelson on 18 in 2004 was louder, if shorter, than Tiger Stadium 1979 vs USC, my former benchmark.

Sunnyvale muni, any afternoon.  US 101 runs right next to the course, another freeway (237) cuts through the middle of it
and in the afternoon when the 4-prop sub-hunters return to Moffett Field about 50 feet over your head, it will beat anything.

Moffett Field sits directly across 101 and the landing lights are right in the middle of the fairway of on hole.

Play there and noise will never bother you again.

The other loudest noise was everyone groaning when Tiger missed his putt on 18 at Oakmont last year.

That's Mr. Jack Hamm!

The winner in this debate is definitely close-range overhead thunder.  I've played golf alongside Navy bases, airports, and other such distractions.  Thunder overhead is by far the loudest.

Marty, baby, among the cognoscenti it's just "Concorde," without the "the."

Jack Hamm told me so.

Good point, but it reminded me that the loudest sound is the air-horn I get to blast to get everyone off the course before that bolt of lightning.

The loudest one of those was the time a player on the Futures Tour climbed into my cart for the ride in and sat on the air horn.  Some it wasn't
muffled, but more focused. ;)

Concord(e) breaking the sound barrier on its trials in the late 60s/early 70s over Portpatrick GC in Scotland. Alsager GC on the Staffs/Cheshire border is right next to an ammmunition factory and occasionally the bangs are intense, so too at Shaw Hill (Lancs) where Nick Dougherty grew up - it's a pretty devatating noise when they blow something up. (I presume/hope they blow something up rather than its blowing up of its own accord.....)

Both of mine have to do with Cars.

1)   Testing for the Indianapolis 500 in my backswing at the Brickyard in Indy.
2)   A kid crashing a BMW into a tree doing 40mph on the drive into the clubhouse at Shoreacres.
