Spanish Bay or Poppy Hills?
« on: June 05, 2008, 10:35:36 AM »
I am playing Pebble and Spyglass on a Thur-Fri in September. I have to choose between Spanish Bay and Poopy Hills on Saturday. I've played Spanish Bay once and recall whining about "target golf." Is Poppy Hills better?

Also, our flight lands in San Jose at 11 on Wed. Any suggestions where we might play that afternoon?

Thanks!

If you're landing in San Jose, don't you want to go to Pasatiempo?  Seems like a pretty easy choice there.  I liked the look of Spanish Bay over Poppy Hills, but I suppose some will feel otherwise.

If Jerry Franklin is still caddying at Pebble Beach, ask for him.  He was an awesome caddy, with great golf and people skills.  He'll come carry your bag at Spyglass and Spanish Bay if you like as well. . .

Considering you called Poppy Hills Poopy Hills twice I would play Spanish Bay.

Play SB. You'll be "pooped" after the first 3 rounds and Poopy is no place for rejuvenation. SB is an easy walk and quite playable from the appropriate tees.

You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?

I guess you're wanting to stay around 17 mile drive?

I guess to say you've played Spanish Bay/Poppy, that's worth something.

But I think that Old Del Monte and Pacific Grove are even more architecturally stimulating, and better courses overall.

I too think you've answered your own question with the intentional mis-spelling.  If that's how you feel about the course, why play it?

I don't find it to be all that bad at all - I've enjoyed every round I've played there.

But in the end also Jon Spaulding is right; SB is an easier walk and much more playable.  It's also prettier.  So do SB.  Old Del Monte is also a decent choice, and also Pacific Grove Muni - but beware, the front nine there is not everyone's cup of tea.

And re the Wed afternoon, if Pasatiempo is not available, Cinnabar Hills will be worth your time.  27 holes, all three nines pretty damn good.  In fact the great Rich Goodale calls it better than Pasatiempo.  For that alone it's worth checking out.

Spanish Bay by a wide margin.

Sure if you are Huck who plays 200 rounds a year on The MP, you drop by Poppy once in a while, but SB gets way too much grief around here. It is a very good course with some great shots and better scenery.

Re; the 11th. There's a ton of choices on the way to Monterey. Pasa is naturally the best choice, but, you may choose some more of the local flavor such as Pajaro Valley.

Sweeney I only with that that were true.  But I am right with you re SB - it does get too much grief in here.  I truly enjoy that course.

But you know.. Adam gives a DAMN good idea about Pajaro too.  Man a few of us played there before TKP and I have to say those are among the wildest and best conditioned greens I have ever played.  I can enthusiastically join in that recommendation as well.

I would also add:

The Ranch - if you want to see a "great engineering feat".
San Juan Oaks in Hollister.

And for price/value certainly can't go wrong with either Pajaro Valley or Pacific Grove.

Some o' you ain't readin':

he said he has to choose between SB and Poppy.  Sounds like he's got a package.

Here's what I'd do.  I'd play Spanish Bay to fill up the package or whatever is the reason you have to pick one of the two, then if there's time, I'd absolutely, positively go play Pacific Grove late in the afternoon and get back to Spanish Bay for sunset...

I tried to stick to that, really I did!  But when others offered up other alternatives, well... tough not to comment.  In the end, I like your plan.

Some can't read and it appears that would include you as well.. ;)

My post was a suggestion for this question.

I will agree with your suggestion though, SB at sunset is a mighty fine place to be.

I played Poppy and Pacific Grove last week. Poppy is in great shape and just held the NCGA senior championship there. I feel that Poppy is more of a challenge than Spanish Bay, although SB is more scenic. Pacific Grove is having green problems, burnt out, although playable.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Thanks for the reminder about Pasatiempo, I have always wanted to play there! Great suggestion!

As for my poor typing skillls...I have been properly embarrassed...Gee, I miss this place! I guess that is a fair price for some good advice.

And this trip is better than a package...I will be the guest of a big company who is covering the  Pebble-Spyglass-S.B/PoPPy rounds! I really shouldn't try to squeeze in and afternoon rounds..the least I can do is attend their afternoon meetings, right?

Bill, you might have corrected the thread title, but I believe you've created an undying nickname for those here who don't care for PH.

Rick - that nickname has existed for a long time.  So have Sloppy Hills and Choppy Hills, likely some others.  This course has nothing if not detractors.

Well, Huck, I'll have to play it some day so I'll know which of the nicknames fits best.

Cinnabar-ugh...  I dare anyone to walk the Canyon 9 and live to tell about it.  But we've been going back and forth about this for years ;D

But I agree, play Spanish Bay, it's an easier walk although Poppy can be lots of fun from the proper set of tee boxes (which is a mix of Blue and White for me).

Hi Mike!

Well.... Cinnabar is still there and remains a difficult walk, particularly the Canyon nine.  Reasonable minds do disagree on its quality, but in the end do you have a better suggestion right there near San Jose assuming Pasatiempo can't be done?

Huck,

If he's driving to the Monterey Peninsula in the afternoon I would play San Juan Oaks, I have always really liked that golf course.

I too like SJO; I just wouldn't seek it out as being far superior to Cinnabar.  But that is on the way anyway!  In the end Adam made a good suggestion for Pajaro Valley.  I'd do that before SJO.  You should see the course these days... green perfection.

the last time I played there with Pete he must have beaten me 9 and 8-he was playing that well and I was playing that badly ;D

It's been 3 years but, based on the work that had already been done by Pete, that the course must be in incredible shape by now.  It's not the most difficult course in the world but certainly fun, particularly #5.
