John,

Immediately go to the nearest dominatrix in Vegas and have yourself spanked for using Desert Pines and Great Track in the same sentence.  IMO it is an abortion.  The faux driving range is so over the top it is comical.  The course itself is an accident waiting to happen.  True story - Bob Lewis hit the billboard of the strip club hanging over the rough on the hole next to the road.  Given that he hit the stripper right in her special place, we decided to give him both a free drop and remove a stroke from his score.  We had a bet on who could find the tee on the scorecard since five of them were not mowed and only mentioned so the course could pretend to have distance to it.  Balls come at you from all directions.  If this is an example of Perry Dye's work on small sites, he does not get it.

Ross is the prime example of good routing on small sites.

And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

Dave thank you for the comments.  The course is always in great shape, yes the range is commercial, but this isn't a private course, a resort course.  Yes, balls do come at you on a few holes but what do you expect from a course on 115 acres.  I know Ross did great work on small pieces of property, but who today is known for that.  Take care Dave, I am going to find that Dominatrix, tell Tater I said hello.

John,

I do not think anyone today is known for it.  Having listened to Mike Young's philosphy, I would feel pretty comfortable with him on a small piece of property.  I am sure their are many others who could do it.

Another modern example of an excellent course on a small property is Gil Hanse's Craighead Links (at Crail) in Scotland.

The course was routed on a very small property and I think Gil did about as good as could be expected given the space limitations as well as the limitations on touching ancient stone walls.  There is one spot on the back 9 (tee shot on 12 ??) where there is a bit of danger to another tee (#15 ??) but overall its a wonderful course to play with many excellent holes and beautiful Muirfield-like bunkering.

Two other Hanse designs are on small properties, as well:

Applebrook:

and Tallgrass:

I didn't even realize that Hanse's course
at Crail was routed on such a small piece
of property until I re-read the GCA write
up, just now.  I thought the course was
wonderful and didn't feel like I was in
others' way while playing.  (It helped that
there were very few people on the course)
