I actually wrote the rules for our club, and I set them up to allow ladies to keep their hats on in the clubhouse?  Why?  Women hate hat-head!

Keep in mind that we're a young club with a lot of famlies and a very laid back attitude.  "No jacket required"

not in the south gents.

How far south are we talking about here?? I have found that once you cross the border from Georgia to Florida the 'rules of the south' go away quickly the farther south you get. ;D

good point. the north starts south of jacksonville and goes all the way down to miami with the exception of a few old line clubs.

I would agree with no hats in the clubhouse.

Don't get me started about hats on backwards on the course...

Allan,

As one desperately in need of such from time to time, is the rally hat permitted (another arguement in favor of the bucket hat) and if so for how many holes?

I have been at clubs where the person wearing a hat buys drinks for everyone.  I don't understand why anyone would wear a hat indoors.  I had a wedding a few weeks ago and I had to ask a full grown man to take his hat off in the sanctuary!!

I'm amused that it would even be a question! What kind of a jackass would march through a clubhouse with a hat on? I have to say this person would not be invited back to my club if they did this as my guest. Great chance to get a rather unpleasant letter from the Club's Board of Governors. Always remember that golf is a gentlemans game! :)

I only wear my hat inside the clubhouse of MPCC, and backwards at that, unless my pony tail is hanging through the back.

Nuzzo of course, was defenestrated upon his return to the Hyatt Regency. he landed on his hat.

I am in violent agreement with the sentiment on the thread.  No hats in the clubhouse.  The only exception as previously stated is from the locker room out the door.  As an additional note, a hat must always be worn brim foward.  No rally caps.

On a related note, I am adamently opposed to denim anywhere on the property.

Dean, allow me a light hearted observation here....you state your approval for a proper attire etiquette, followed by "nuff said" and "I'm out"?

While I do not care and most people wear them in the grill and pro shop at my club, I take it off because it shows respect and because some people adamantly believe they should be taken off. I would rather honor people with that view than offend them.

I don't give a rats ass about what people where in or outdoors.  Sure, I have preferences and will enforce the hat rule at my club, but generally speaking its none of my business.  I prefer not to wear a hat and always look to take it off, but life's circumstances dictate that I be aware of the elements.  The only time I will wear a hat indoors is if its cold.  I won't be exposed to the elements because somebody doesn't want to turn the heat on.  If that means leaving (which I have done) because a rule is more important than my health then so be it.

Strange.  I started reading this thread and it reminded me of attending The Ohio State University summer golf camp when I was in HS where the coach, Jim Brown, was very strict about us taking our caps off while indoors.  I pop on over to golf.com, and see that Coach Jim Brown just retired after 36 seasons as Head Coach of the buckeye golf team.  Unfortunately, I'm been slacking in the indoor cap ettiquette department for awhile.

I could care less either way. If it's the club rule I do it so as not to offend anyone. But considering I go to work in jsome combination of jeans, tennis shoes, shorts, golf shirts and sandals I'm obviously not big on dress codes.

What I don't like is when I go to Formby and I walk inside to the woman at the front desk and ask if it is okay to play in shorts and ankle socks (it was in the mid 80's that day) but if it's not I have pants and regular socks in the car to change into and she says it's okay but when I'm done playing (after not seeing another soul on the golf course) the club secretary sees me and chews me out and then tries to invite to room in the clubhouse the next time I play there. Now that pisses me off.

If it was the old secretary at Muirfield he'd probably have had you flogged or keelhauled, you got off lucky at Formby!    I'll bet he chewed you out with typical British class though, right?  I suspect his offer for you to stay in the clubhouse next time was a respectful apology of sorts.

Yes - it was a British chewing out. I didn't mind the rule and would have complied - but I asked and told I was okay. That's the annoying part.

Private clubs need fewer rules, not more rules.  The no hat rule is stupid, anachronistic and overly fussy.  It does, however, fit in nicely with the denim allergy that seems endemic in clubs across America.

I'm pretty much in the camp with Terry on this one.

Yes I understand its tradition.
Yes I understand its supposed to be the gentlemanly thing to do.
Yes I understand your indoors and techincally don't need it.

But I don't see a real practical reason for this.  If we're going to say "well we've always done it that way" then I can think of a lot of undesireable things we've just always done as a society for traditions sake that we rightly so no longer do. Other reasons such as being improper, ungentlemanly, poor behavoir is completely arbitrary and without basis IMO.

For example if we lived by Japanese standards, we would all be extremely rude for wearing shoes indoors which is probably a much bigger no-no than wearing a hat indoors.  So this comes to the heart of the issue.  What makes it OK to wear shoes indoors here and not there?  On the same vien what makes it improper to wear a hat indoors?? At least in Japan there is some practical reason in not wanting to get mud/oil/whatever else is on the bottom of your shoe on your carpet/flooring.  But who is hurt so much by someone wearing a hat on their dome while knocking back a cold one after the round?

All this being said, I understand when I'm a visitor in other people's abodes or clubs I will respectfully abide by thier wishes.  But you can always wear a hat anytime you visit me and its perfectly fine.  ;)

The employees in the pro shops and restaurants of many daily fee courses I play can regularly be found wearing their caps while working. Perhaps this is a sign of the degradation of human society, perhaps they just don't know any better.

I'm sure that I've worn my hat indoors before, but if I did it was an oversight. And I hate hat head as well !

I've always found the hatred for denim at golf courses to be a bit humorous. Is it anything less than a bias based on class? I don't wear denim to courses, as it's a battle that just doesn't seem worth fighting (and because the heaviness of the material isn't something I'd want to wear for sport), but I've always wondered about it.
