Are Wearing Hats Inside The Clubhouse O.K.?
« on: June 03, 2008, 08:43:54 PM »
I'm curious to see how the GCA community feels about wearing hats inside the clubhouse or grill room. I know some clubs allow it while other clubs strictly forbid it. I belong to a private club that does not allow it and a semi-private club that does allow it.

Personally, I'm old school and like the idea of banning hats while indoors.

No hats indoors outside of the locker room.

first of all, welcome JB

2nd of all, if you are ever in the company of a very fine GCAer from South Africa who you will very probably be hearing from on this thread I would strongly recommend NOT wearing your hat inside while in his presence!

Hopefully Bob Huntley won't see this thread.

Funny - we have finally educated our male members to doff their hats/caps in the clubhouse.

Sunday after a couples event followed by drinks and dinner, I was amused to see the number (at least six) of ladies wearing hats and/or caps.  Pretty funny.  ;D

Yeah, I would certainly say that wearing the hat indoors is not a good practice. Of course, I come from a military background as well, so in that situation, you learn very, VERY fast to take the hat (cover) off indoors. I say no, and if I ever own a club, I will personally pull the hat off your head if I see you wearing it in my clubhouse.

What's so funny? The protocol that insists men remove their hats indoors permits women to leave them on.

A gentlemen never wears a hat indoors.

Ladies may wear hats indoors.

Etiquette 101, no?

But I'm over 45.  I still can't believe they need to tell people to remove their hats when the national anthem plays.

Alledgedly, Paul Bear Bryant never wore his houndstooth hat in the Superdome.  That's good enough for me.

found this on Google......

They met in the first Sugar Bowl game played under a roof, in the Louisiana Superdome, and there Paterno asked Bryant why he didn't wear his trademark houndstooth hat. "My mama always told me to take off my hat inside," said the old boy, who never forgot he came from alongside a creek in outback Arkansas.

That is old school.......

I am in violent agreement with the sentiment on the thread.  No hats in the clubhouse.  The only exception as previously stated is from the locker room out the door.  As an additional note, a hat must always be worn brim foward.  No rally caps.

On a related note, I am adamently opposed to denim anywhere on the property.

I am okay with hats being worn while in front of the urinal. Other than that, I see no reason to wear a hat indoors

Yes, I have to agree - no hats. And yet, I might change my mind if the hats weren't so god-awful looking nowadays. Tell me, was there anything wrong with that short-brimmed straw fedora that Sam Snead used to wear? That was a terrific hat, comfortable and stylish.  Yes, its only 'drawback' was that you couldn't plaster corporate logos all over the damn thing.  Which reminds me of a line by Fran Lebowitz about tee-shirts with writing on them - to paraphrase: "If no one wants to hear from you, what makes you think they want to hear from your hat?" But anyway, no hats in the clubhouse, a nice thing. But bring back the straw fedora, an even nicer thing.

What's so funny? The protocol that insists men remove their hats indoors permits women to leave them on.

From "Etiquette for hats and Caps,"  A woman may leave her hat on indoors or during the playing of The National Anthem, unless it is considered unisex like a baseball cap.  When wearing such a unisex cap, a woman should follow the same guidelines as for men.

reminds me of the great story Jack told on the Shell episode where he played Gentle Ben...Jack said the first time they met was at Merion in 71...Jack was taking care of business at a urinal when ben saw him and nervously stuck out his hand to shake Jack's hand...Jack told him he'd have to wait a moment....

Peter -

The Emily Post Institute indicates that ladies should remove their baseball caps in the clubhouse.

They also indicate that "women's hats that are part of their ensembles and therefore fashion accessories may be worn indoors".

These two instructions are in direct conflict, and most female golfers I know give significant thought to their hats and consider them to be fashion accessories.

How far south are we talking about here?? I have found that once you cross the border from Georgia to Florida the 'rules of the south' go away quickly the farther south you get. ;D

At our club nobody seems to care if you wear a hat or not in the men's locker room or the pro shop. I've never been in the ladies' locker room but presumably they're likewise free to keep them on while stopping off for a quick potty break at the turn.

But no hats in the dining room or grille area. And woe be unto the golfer who comes into the dining room on a Sunday with either a hat or shorts.

I would agree with no hats in the clubhouse.

Don't get me started about hats on backwards on the course...
I don't know how I would ever have been able to look into the past with any degree of pleasure or enjoy the present with any degree of contentment if it had not been for the extraordinary influence the game of golf has had upon my welfare.
