Name the course and the source of the quote ...
« on: May 21, 2008, 06:18:41 PM »
"The result is the Audrey Hepburn of golf courses — charming, petite, beautiful and the envy of all."

Very touching wordsmith for a course I have not played thus far but will most certainly when opportunity arrives.

One clue -- according to the author -- despite the lack of overall distance, the course still has six solid two-shot par-4 holes among its 18.

Great quote Matt. I look fwd to seeing who penned it.

I'd have an absolute stab in the dark at the course as either Fishers Island or Maidstone?

Matt,

I'd guess that Tom Doak is the author.

I'll have to think about the golf course

I'll guess Cypress Point

I think 'petite' would apply to Swinley Forest.

I managed to find the quote but cheated so won't spoil the fun.

Both course and source have been correctly identified, but not in the same post ;)

2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

Andrew,

That would seem to leave Tom Doak with Merion, Myopia and Interlachen.

Matt Ward without Interlachen, or David Scalletti without Merion.

I've eliminated Swinley for instinctive reasons.

Since there's been so much discussion on Merion, I'll go with Doak on Merion.

My default answer would then be Doak and Myopia.

In my book, "Golf... it's a funny game" I wrote of Merion in a similar manner.

My words...... "I don't usually assign a gender to a golf course, but to me, Merion has an unmistakable aura of femininity. All subtle curves, inimitable style, elegance and grace. It's the Audrey Hepburn of golf courses. Beautiful to photograph and beguiling to play."

I saw a similar quote to that which started the thread in a recent history of Merion, but that was two years ago when I came across and that might be were the quote in question came from, although I am not sure of the author. At the time I just thought the course struck us both in much the same way.

Being gentlemen, we shall disregard the question of how you knew that Audrey Hepburn was beguiling to play.

I'd a thought it was Herb Wind about a place like Seminole.
