Clue; the club's claim to fame is something we are all, all too familiar with.

Right country Gents, but neither of these.


It dates from 1882 and in the early days had good connections with the Royal Blackheath Club. In gratitude for help recieved the members  donated a Cup to Blackheath that is still played for.  IN 1901 Horace G Hutchinson was Captain.

The club is still around and I'm pretty sure Mark Rowlinson has mentioned it on here before.

Does it help to know it had the second oldest Artisan's Golf club in England, including "such players as... Mr Arthur Smith who went on to win the American Open Championship." ? Or that professionals have included Bernard Sayers and Willie Fernie?

Nice try Melvyn (the bunker looks the right size) but you'll find it's closer to home.

According to a club document I have, the course was replanned by "Mr H S Holt(sic)" shortly after two clubs merged in 1913.  However the work was never completed and after the first world war a new course had to be constructed.  Several books still it credit it to Colt.


NB this is yet another club that Colt worked on in a year he visited Pine Valley.

It's Great Yarmouth and Caister;  I remember the spelling mistake in the club history.  Looks like a decent links.

We have a winner.  Congratulations, Paul.

(Interesting what people remember.  My club, Upminster, published a 50th anniversary booklet saying the course was designed by H A Colt.  I offer these two documents as part of the evidence that the 1970’s and 80’s were part of the dark ages as far as appreciation of classic golf architecture goes.)




And the Clubs enduring claim to fame. The home of “Bogey”.
