My favorite tree
« on: March 30, 2008, 12:44:46 PM »

Was out in Southhampton yesterday and drove past Shinnecock Hills.  My favorite tree on the course has been removed.  The picture above was taken last summer, as of yesterday the tree behind the Redan green has been removed, but the stand of pines in the background remains.  Do you think removing this tree adds to or takes away from the course?

A middle distance tree - out of play - with that magnificently aged structure - gone.  Shame.   I can just imagine a Red-shouldered hawk, perched high, waiting for gophers to appear - on the lookout for turf destructing varmints and Mr. Isenhour.

I've never played the course but I prefer the look with the pines gone.

Seriously, from what I hear they have done just about everything right at the course.   I'll assume they had good reason to remove the tree, which doesn't appear to impact play from the pictures I've seen.
