Fess up - do professional architects play computer golf?
« on: March 19, 2008, 12:08:35 PM »
Just wondering.

Tiger Woods Golf is a very realistic game.

Could a golf simulation be a useful tool in design work?

Does anyone use it?

Voytek:

I am an architect and some days I 'play' all day on my computer...it's up to my clients if I know what I'm doing, but at least they are paying me to play ;D ::)

I play Wii golf with my kids (I hold the 9 hole course record at 2 under par).

As for design exploration and/or graphics, I've played with some of it but I know Rick Phelps uses the Arnold Palmer Golf Course Design software to graphically show some his designs.

Nope.  No time.  We do work with Photo Shop and Sketch Up and do animations but most use them for sales and marketing.

I recall the wonderful angles presented at TPC Sawgrass, on SEGA's old PGA Tour golf game. It's more than fifteen years since I've played this game, but who ever translated the Stadium course to this virtual reality deserves credit. When you're controlling a virtual player who can hit "the shots", the bite-off-as-much-as-you-can-chew angles at TPC Sawgrass are clear as day. Jokes aside, the Stadium course on this old SEGA game presents an interesting illustration of strategic golf course design.

There is a free online computer version of golf called Shot Online.  I've played it off and on, its kind of addicting.  I've built my character up to where I can bomb it much longer than Tiger now.   ;D

I think this thread is specific to PS3.  I was having a conversation with Ben Cowan Dewar a while back and I brought up this topic because of the relevancy I saw in being able to study the courses that are on the game.

Along the lines of Jeff's Sawgrass comments I found the same sort of challenge while playing Riviera, Harbour Town and Sawgrass.  If you play Tiger's character it will be hard to relate to the angles and challenges most golfers face.  If you play with a new character, one you will develop (this character starts with no skill), you can see the challenges a high handicapper might face.  The realism of the challenge is hard to beat, the angles and yardages to clear bunkers at Riviera, the tree lines and angles at Harbour Town, the risk and reward at Sawgrass.

The game also exposes how boring places like Firestone, East Lake, Cog Hill and some others are. There is no thought necessary on these courses.

It helps that I'm playing on a 52" HDTV but I think it's helped me learn a lot about the courses that are offered, the graphics are awesome.

We need someone to come up with the software to design your own course for PS3, maybe something similar to the computer designs that have been available in the past on a game such as Links Golf.

In the meantime I suggest everyone go out and buy Tiger Woods 08 and a PS3, don't worry, the blue ray technology is going to replace HDDVD's.
