O/T Offensive ED Ads
« on: March 16, 2008, 04:20:09 PM »
I am sitting here reading the papers and watching the golf from Bay Hill.

This is for those parents whose young children love to watch Tiger play, and there are many.

How do you explain to them, the problems of Erectile Dysfunction and why a man and a woman are lying in separate bathtubs a foot apart".  Or do you go to the mute button  and curse the FCC for not  allowing a bit of decorum when they know children will be watching.

God, reading that makes me feel like a curmudgeon. I would hate to have a grandchild question me on the rigors of priapism after they heard the warnings about how you will die if it lasts longer than X number of hours.

Amen Bob, I have a Kindergarten aged son and I turn the channel every time the faucet blows up in the Cialis ad. No wonder one out of four 14 year old girls has an STD.

I hit the "last channel" button on my remote very frequently when watching sports on TV.

One out of four teenage girls have an STD because a faucet blows up?  I thought it was because uptight Christians didn't want sex ed taught in our schools....hmmm.

Maybe if the demographic wasn't dominated by old men we wouldn't be seeing those ads.

For kids, flipping the channel works, hitting the mute works, giving them a quarter and telling them them to call you in 10 years for the explanation also does the trick.  ;D

Bob,

The world of adult advertising seems to be creeping into daytime and early evening family time slots, especially sporting events.

Equally as offesive was the fan who yelled at VJ when he was "in" his swing on # 18.

When an announcer declared that they wished that the fan could be removed from the property, I wondered why they couldn't be immediately ejected, and prohibited from attending in the future.

Good catch!  I guess bigotry against Christians is one of the last OK things to do.  Yep, if it's evil it must be those "uptight" Christians.

The ads are a bit much--the last channel button seems like a good option for many with kids.  Unfortunately, I'm getting old enough to actually start listening >:(

My Amen was agnostic -- I don't think Sex Ed or the lack of it is the issue. When 4 hour hard-ons are discussed in the middle of the day during golf you don't have to be born again to know something's out of whack. If you have young children and don't get uptight my guess is your head's in the sand.

A few weeks ago my 7 year old son and I are watching golf and a Viagra commercial comes on. He asks, "What is that for?" I said "It is a drug for men." He said, "I know that but what is it for?" I told him I would tell him on his birthday in a few months since I had been planning to start discussing sex with him anyway. But, irritates the heck out of me that all I want to do is watch Tiger kick butt and I can't even enjoy that without the fear of my son being exposed to things I'm not ready to expose him to yet. It's golf for goodness sakes.

Then last week he comes down stairs and says "Oh, this is my favorite commercial." I don't know what it is and of course it's a Viagra commercial. He then states singing, "Viva, Viagra."

It's totally out of control in my opinion.

Well Buck, you were the one that tied an ED commercial to an increase in SDT's in teenagers...but the fact is, education about these viruses and how they are spread, along with early immunization, will go a long way toward decreasing those numbers...

Do a google search and see which group has been very vocal AGAINST education and immunization...

Personally, I do not see anything offensive in those ads. No bare skin is ever shown, no fully erect penises, no bare breasts....on the other hand...every morning I see rampant consumerism aimed directly at children blasting out of the TV....along with a healthy dose of food that leads directly to childhood obesity....

The scary thing is that many teens and early 20 something men use Viagra and go all night.

As a father of a 6 year old girl, I have absolutely no problem with ED ads. All of those ads are done pretty tastefully. There are much more risque beer commercials than that (that usually run on prime time).

When she asks, I tell here exactly what they are about. I do it in a very factual, clinical, matter-of-fact way (like I do with every single question she asks about everything else).

To me, the fact that 1/4 of girls have STD proves that it is better to teach them about sex early and often than trying to just sweep it aside. I certainly do not want to teach her that sex is something not to be discussed.

I was embarrased for the guy...totally uncalled for, and the guy should have been immediately ejected.

My wife is a 1st grade teacher.....and from the stories she tells of things she overhears in her classroom, the last thing parents need to worry about is a commercial hinting at weenie problems.

Oh, and one more thing. If you want to avoid talking about ED, just get a DVR and never watch the event live.

I started watching today's broadcast about 2 hours after it started and I still finished watching the event close to when it ended live (there is a lot of dead airtime in a golf telecast).

Problem solved.

As far as hard numbers...no.

I frequent some other sports message boards with many younger members.

They have topics on there relating to its use and availability.
