Please rank Murcar, Peterhead and Fraserburgh
« on: February 12, 2008, 06:05:56 AM »
Can only play two of these three on coming trip and would very much appreciate input from those who have played all of them.  I have assumed Murcar is very much a cut above, but is that correct?

And thanks to all those who gave suggestions for accommodation....much appreciated.

Without knowing anything about any of the three, I would have to cast a vote for a course named "Peterhead" over either Murcar or Fraserburgh.

Sorry.

I played Murcar and Fraserburgh, not Peterhead

Fraserburgh I thought was a better course than Murcar.
Murcar has some great dramatic holes but some weak ones, but Fraserburgh has some great fun holes, only 1 and 18 are featureless

Out of the three I've only played Murcar which I'd happily revisit.

I assume from the accommodation thread that you are also playing Cruden Bay.  Is Royal Aberdeen also on your itinerary?
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

Murcar significantly over Peterhead, even though the latter is well worth playing.  Haven't played Fraserburgh.

For what it's worth, I think Fraserburgh gets seriously overlooked because Jim Finnegan doesn't give it a mention, preferring instead to follow one man's advice and go to Peterhead...

...To my very poor recollection, Fraserburgh is a better course than Peterhead and should be played along with Cruden Bay, Royal Aberdeen and Murcar on a visit to the North-East.

A long time ago though. I can recall very few of the details.

Shame on you, A.G. Crockett.  It's Peter-(heed).

1) Murcar
2) Peterhead
3) Fraserburgh

THE NEXT SEVEN:  Alfred E. Tupp Holmes Municipal Golf Course, Willi Plett's Sportspark and Driving Range, Peachtree, Par 56, Browns Mill, Cross Creek, Piedmont Driving Club

Played Fraserburgh and Peterhead, but not Murcar.

I'd rate Fraserburgh a notch above Peterhead. It's more consistently good throughout, and although 1 and 18 are dull, the opening trio at Peterhead is arguably duller, and the front nine at Peterhead is fairly weak, with only 9 being a truly above-average hole. Fraserburgh gets going at No. 2, and features consistently good links -- nothing I'd call truly great, but little that is average, either, until you come off Corbie Hill and return to the flat meadow of 18. A short course -- it tips out at 6,300 yards -- but its small greens and exacting demands on approach shots provide some character and a good test of the game.

Having said that, I really enjoyed Peterhead's back nine -- a very good and very linksy nine amid the high dunes.

A hidden little course with a great history nearby is Inverallochy, a true out-and-back links that is not in the league of either Fraserburgh or Peterhead, but nonetheless has some good holes. There is also a fairly rudimentary nine-hole links course at Rosehearty in the same area.

I have played Peterhead and Fraserburgh and will play Murcar this June.  Fraserburgh is signifcantly ahead of Peyerhead both in the fun scale and teh quality of conditioning.  Fraserburgh has 16 wonderful challenging, sometimes quirky and fun links holes.  With a couple of standouts such as a stretch from 12-16 that has blind sbhots well postioned cross bunkers rolling greens.  I would drive right by Peterhead and play Fraserburgh in a heartbeat.
I have heard that Murcar is a notch above the other two.

If I had to pay the green fee then I don't think Murcar merits a return trip.  I would be much more inclined to see both Peterhead and Fraserburgh rather than Murcar.  However, if the green fees are paid then I would go back to Murcar as one of the two.  There are a few holes at Murcar that are at least as good as anything at Aberdeen or Cruden Bay, but the course as a whole doesn't measure up to either.  Mind you, I am told that some of the holes around the hill have been improved so perhaps Murcar is in the same class as CB & Aberdeen.
