Lloyd, if you compare the reactions to both Hogan and Byron Nelson when they died I think the totality of who they were mattered.  Hogan was revered for his on course accomplishments, his business accumen and his courage.  His relations with other golfers etc. did detract some from his memory.  When Nelson died folks remembered his accomplishments but revered him as a man.  So yes, I think it matters.
