I am currently working on Patty Jewett Golf Course in Colorado Springs, CO and it was designed by Willie Campbell in 1898.  It is the third oldest public course west of the Mississippi.

Sounds like a fun project Kevin.....is much, if any, of the original architecture still present?

Do you happen to know the other two front-runners for the "oldest publics west of the Mississippi"?

Fairfield Golf and Country Club in Fairfield Iowa is a 9 hole course built in 1892.  It (like many others) claims to be the oldest course west of the Mississippi.

Royal Montreal was founded in 1873.
But the course is much younger as they have moved locations at least once.  Reports say that a Scotch soldier played golf on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City in the late 18th century but that doesn't answer the questions in the OP.

The Oldest Course West of the Mississippi is Town & Country in St. Paul, Mn.  1887. If I recall also an original member of the USGA. Designed by Robert Foulis who then went on to design the first 9 at The Minikahda Club in 1898.  White Bear Yacht Club was in 1892?  I believe.

According to the Pebble Beach Company:

"Opened in 1897, Del Monte Golf Course is the oldest course in continuous operation west of the Mississippi. Designed by golf and polo enthusiast Charles Maud, this inland course boasts a meandering layout that has challenged golfers for more than a century."

Jim,

Dutcher is recognized as the oldest 9-holer in the US? Seems odd...I figured there would be much older courses on the East Coast. You have a date for Van Cortlandt Park?

Sounds like Aetna Springs might be a close competitor if that is the actual case.

Sean Tully or Tom Doak care to chime in on info about Aetna?

(I know you're out there lurking Tully........ ;) )
Recent research (2020-2021) has established that there was not a Dutcher course until 1901. VanCortlandt Park is 1895.
