Six rounds of Hell
« on: November 29, 2007, 12:06:52 PM »
A friend of mine is in the finals of Q School this week. Anyone know anything about Crooked Cat and Panther Lake?

I couldn't even find the architects when I went on their website. These courses any good?

Dan, I've got one for you.  Chris Kirk, late of the Univ. of GA, is the the final round of Q-school.  He is a great young man who played his HS golf in our league against my team, went on to have a great college career, and delayed turning pro after graduation to play in the Walker Cup.

His senior year in HS, he shot 65 in heavy rain wearing rain gloves the whole round; birdied the last two holes to get his team in the state tournament by a shot.  Very polite, very well-behaved, and one of the best putters I've ever seen.  He's worth rooting for.

Dan,

Jim McGovern, out of Hackensack. Great guy, worth rooting for!

PS, you think I don't have the live scoring link open on my computer already? ;)

Chris Kirk (t-90 at the moment) needs to start making some birdies. Put on those rain gloves, kid!

Is that the same Jim McGovern who won the Houston Open (I could look it up!) lo these many years ago.

I remember his hitting some extraordinary 2nd to a par-5, for eagle, en route to that victory.

I marked him in my head, when I saw that shot, as a guy to watch.

Why hasn't he been? Not-so-good putter?

(Just checked: Shell Houston Open, 1993. 14 years ago! Tempus fugit ... how do you say "when you're having fun" in Latin?)

Give some rooting for my good buddy Matt Bettencort, who is also trying to endure the 6 round marathon and got off to a shaky start.

Bill, The courses are good. Way above average for typical Florida golf. No housing will ever intrude on the site and the facility can handle maximum capacity. The driving range is cool. A one mile in circumference circle. There's a short course, too I believe.

I don't recall the "real" designers, but Isao Ioki(sp?) does get some credit.

The holes and greens on the Panther Lake course are slightly more interesting than it's sister, but both are relatively flat, devoid of much interior contours. I recall having to try to figure out what the shaper was thinking, which means I had figure where to aim, 2-6 inches max, right or left.

Dan,

Yup, same guy! Got off to great start winning 4 times on the Hogan Tour (now Nationwide) to get his card. Won the Houston Open, then finished 5th at the Masters and got up to about 30 in the world rankings. Had his card for several years, lost it, but got through Q finals two or three times, then ended up on the Nationwide where he has been for the past several years.

But since you bring up the shot in the Houston Open, and I have read Jimmy publicly confirm the TRUE story, I'll tell it to you:

When Jimmy first got his PGA card he was playing great, but tended to slide back a little on one of the weekend days. "Spending money" as he moved back on the leaderboard. So on Sunday of the Houston Open in '93, Jimmy is fighting for the lead, but bogies 13 and 14 to drop two back...As they walk off the 14th green, Jim's caddy quietly mutters "here we go again." Unfortunately, Jimmy hears this and asks, "what did you say?'" The caddy says "nothing" but Jimmy persists: "WHAT DID YOU SAY?" and I guess the caddy just shuts up...while steam is coming out of Jimmy's ears. He takes his driver on the par 5 15th, smokes it down the middle, and does NOT give it back to the caddy! He hits driver again from the deck to 2 feet, taps in for eagle, and ends up making birdie on 18 to get in a playoff and winning the playoff!

Great story. And there was nothing unfortunate about it! He shoulda kept the muttering caddie forever!

Glad to know my memory isn't so faulty as I sometimes think it is.

Go, Jim McGovern!

Both courses should prove to be good tests, especially if the wind blows
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Also, please send good vibes towards a guy named Randy Leen (who, the last I checked, was in 130th place). Randy lived in Cincinnati when I was a golf pro here, and he practiced at my course whenever he was in town. I got to know him very well as a result. Like everyone who is playing this week I am sure, Randy is an incredibly hard worker. He's a super nice guy, and in my opinion deserves whatever good things come his way.

He was the low amateur in the 1996 U.S. Open at Oakland Hills, beating fellow amateurs Tiger Woods and Trip Kuehne. Good luck, Randy...I hope you turn it around.

From pgatour.com:

• By the numbers ... The top 25 players and ties at the conclusion of the tournament will receive 2008 PGA TOUR cards, while the next number of players nearest 50 will receive full status on the Nationwide Tour. All remaining players will have conditional status on the Nationwide Tour in 2008.

Frank Lickliter II shot 62-62. I believe he just broke BOTH course records on consecutive days...Unbelievable!

-20 after two rounds just looks so strange on the leaderboard.

Bill,

Both courses are pretty good.  Most guys make a point f playing them each year at the PGA show.  As for the architect, we lost Dave a few years ago...  Here's a link to a thread that was on the site: http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forums2/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=20757;start=msg373262#msg373262

If I'm Colt Knost, I'm starting to wish I'd delayed turning pro until next April.

I followed Chris some at the Walker Cup.  You are right, he is a very nice kid, well behaved and can really play.

My nephew is caddying for a young guy named Matt Bettancourt who is struggling at +3 after two rounds, way down there.  Michael is looking forward to looping on the big tour, so Matt needs to kick it up a bit.

What about Lickliter?  :o

I've only played Panther Lakes, but it's perfect for tour school - long, long long, with big flat greens and zero quirk.  Perfect for tour school!  ::)

There is a "kid" I know pretty well from the Philly area (Yardley CC) , John Rusk, who is at -6 through two rounds.  He has been putting in time on the Florida Mini Tours over the last two years and has played well in both the first two stages.  Hopefully he'll continue his good play.  At least at this point if his doesn't stay in the top 25, he'll have some status on the Nationwide Tour next year.

Incredible.  A record for most under after 33 holes in a legit pro tournament?  (I doubt they keep records for that, but seems unbelievable.)

I agree Rick, regardless of whether he qualifies. Of course everyone's situation is different, but that's a pretty big gift horse he turned down.
