Birmingham, Alabama Golf
« on: November 27, 2007, 10:31:37 PM »
In March, 8 of us are heading to Birmingham for 4 days of golf.   Along the way, we'll likely catch the first round NCAA match-up.  My question, we are likely going to play Shoal Creek and the Country Club of Birmingham.

Are there any other must-plays?  Any ideas?

Dont know about the golf, but if it's  1st round NCAA game, dont buy tickets ahead of time, scalp them. They will go for less than face value. My group bought them in Charlotte in 2006 and couldnt give away extras...and scalped in New Orleans in 2007 and saved a ton!

If you can get access to Shoal Creek and Birmingham CC, you should be able to play Mountain Brook CC. It is another Ross course located near Birmingham CC. I enjoyed it, and It has extraordinary variety, especially in the par 4's.

Ryan,

Two pieces of advice:

1. Spend one day and make the 45 minute drive toward Tuscaloosa and play Gil Hanse's Capstone Club. It's very fun. I played there about a year ago and would love to play it when it's faster and firmer.

2. Go out for beers in Five Points South. I'm a big fan of Dave's. A bunch of good beers on tap. Good drinking spot.

Ryan,

It's too early to think about basketball.  The Illini still have some football to play!  :)

GCA member Sam Sikes is from the Birmingham area.  I think he said the west course at CC of Birmingham is the preferred course.  I played Shoal   Creek a couple years ago.  Very nice place to play golf.

On the way out to Shoal Creek you have to eat and I stress have to stop and get a burger at Hamburger Heaven you won't regret it. Mountian Brook is fantastic and Shoal Creek you will be very dissappointed to the max. Nice facility but course is very hoe hum. West course is nice extremely hard at least in the Invitational they have it set up  hard and fast. Limestone Springs is the next best thing pass on the Trent Jones Trail. Rembember though Hamburger Heaven and if your coming down through Nashville, Tn just across the Al state line there is a course with Turtle in its name that is really good also.

I second the nomination of Limestone Springs.  Jerry Pate doesn't get much love on this site, but Limestone Springs is a lot of fun, challenging but playable.
