Relocated Clubs
« on: July 24, 2002, 11:15:24 AM »
The thread about Portsea GC relocating prompts and interesting discussion topic regarding other clubs that have successfully relocated. The sprawl of populations away from urban areas has made golf course properties the envy of developers. This phenomena ocurred many years ago and appears to be cycling back again.

Here are a few clubs that I am familiar with who successfully relocated all or part of their clubs.

Philadelphia:
Old York Road CC
Phila Cricket
Cedarbrook

Baltimore:
Baltimore CC
Bonnie View (Pending)

Washington DC:
Woodmont
Indian Spring
Argyle
CC at Woodmore

Are there others?

Rob-

What is up with Bonnie View moving?  Is the real estate value that high in the northern Baltimore neighborhood?  I always liked that golf course.

The last heard there was no definite answer about the move. ??? Apparently there is a question about the possible uses and value of the existing property. The current location and facilities have not been able to attract new young members. The club has identified a prospective location in Owings Mill.  ;D

I think The Standard Club in Atlanta moved fairly recently.

Take your pick in NY and NJ, including Ridgewood, Plainfield, Essex County (sort of), North Hills, and Glen Oaks.

I do not think Bethesda CC ever relocated. They may have made some changes to the course for the beltway or 270, but I am not sure. International in Fairfax did build two new holes to accomodate the Fairfax Parkway. Fortunately for them they got rid of the worst hole on the course, old #13.

The Bonnie View move was in the papers last year. I do not know the current status of the move. The older members who live near the course are not interested in moving. At one point there was talk of retaining either a short course or a 9-hole course. Unfortunately this did not make very good economic sense.

Alot of the Melbourne sand belt are relocated clubs -Royal Melbourne, Kingston Heath, Yarra Yarra etc.  I am sure there are people on this board who know the details of others.  THe key parameter is the time of the relocation.  The examples I have listed are 1920s-30s.  I would be interested to learn if any of the clubs mentioned in previous posts were recent relocations.  If so, were they successful relocations?

Ask not what GolfClubAtlas can do for you; ask what you can do for GolfClubAtlas.

The Royal Montreal Golf Club (established in 1873, the oldest in the continent) moved twice.  First just before 1900 and again fifty years ago.

There are SOOO many older clubs that have moved in their early years which makes it tough to be comprehensive.

Just in the Philadelphia area, Merion, Aronimink, Philly CC, Philly Cricket, Huntingdon Valley, Olde York Road CC, Cedarbrook, and White Manor immediately spring to mind.

Adding to Mike's list, I believe that Philadelphia Cricket,
St Davids, and Overbrook also started out in other locations.

Pat,
according to "Golf Clubs of the MGA" Essex County was originally in Hutton Park, then expanded to its current location in 1916.

Other sandbelt courses relocated:

Commonwealth (from Waverley/Chadstone area)
Metropolitan (from the RM links at Caulfield)
Huntingdale (from Eastern)
Victoria (from Fisherman's Bend)

to cut a long story short: all of them!

Regarding the sand belt clubs that moved they all went from terrible land close to the middle of the city to great land significantly further out.
This is not the case with Portsea.
They already have some of the best land and the new stuff is not as good -not close really.

Where were they has always intrested me

For example

The original St Thomas was the 9 hole public course in town until becoming a Walmart last year

A small section of Elm Ridge exists as part of the public course at Dorval Airport in Montreal. Jeremy might no more details on this.

The original York Downs, Toronto's lost Alison course is still there in Earl Bales Park. You can still see much of the mounding and old bunkers. Now they have a Bill Robinson, quite a change in character.

Royal Montreal was on Mount Royal on the west side slopes, now a park.

I'm fairly certain the original Toronto Golf was near Grenadier Pond.

Ian,

There's still a nine-hole private course just west of the Dorval airport (called Dorval Municipal), although I have no idea if it used to be Elmridge.  I thought Elmridge used to be more towards Lachine..(?)..

And Royal Montreal used to be on the east slopes of Mount Royal, but now I'm just being picky... :)
