Rees's Speeches
« on: October 30, 2007, 01:10:55 AM »
From the Golf Digest article on their recent summit.

Quote
Jones, who has remodeled Pinehurst No. 2 and his own No. 7, not to mention several Open venues, seemed to agree that this devotion was cosmetic. "Form follows function," he said. He criticized an almost fad-like return to "splashy" old unkempt looking bunkers as neither practical nor germaine to designs and symptomatic of an overly literal approach. "Every golf course with splashy bunkers should not make the (100 Greatest) list."

Isn't this guy a GM panelist?

How does Rees explain the changes to the bunkering at Atlantic his own course?

As TEP says, it's a great big world of golf out there.  Why shouldn't Rees's views be listened to, or even reflected in the GM rankings?  What he says about form vs. function is something which underlies many of the most interesting (and maybe even the most "important") debates we have on the website.  IMO.

Christ Corey I was just about to post the very same question.  I think the driver was owner Lowell S. who likes the looks of Friar's Head and Sand Hills.  Who is re-doing Atlantics bunkers - anybody know?  I'm not sure but I don't think it is Rees.

I believe it is being done in house by their super Bob Ranum. He is one of the best and most liked and respected in the US.

I'm pretty sure Rees is trying to figure that out also. ;)

Lowell Schulman is not the "owner" of Atlantic.
He sold the club to the members at least 12 years ago and the power structure at Atlantic has reflected that for a LONG time.

Speaking of following fads and other aesthetic issues, is this "flashy"..."Splashy"?

Or is this??

Or, perhaps something out in the wild, rugged west?

Serious question for the Supers, assuming these two courses had similar seasons (and wind) and maintenance crew cost, how do these compare in terms of cost to maintain over a 10 year period?

Never played it. I am guessing that is the forward tee, and that there is a back and to the right tee.

Mike,

I looked at the website..

It's the 304 yard second hole, par four.

Can you at least speculate on what those bunkers are doing there?  ;D

Here's some more snaps...

It looks as though he's trying to evolve from his aesthetic pattern of the past 35 years.

I did recently hear of one reason... It may be Bobby's firm but those employed by the Jones firm are NOT allowed to post in this forum.
Clearly they read it and forbidding them from posting shows a lack of testicular fortitude, IMO.

Keep on giving. It's the standing up to and giving back that makes life spicey. I suppose thats why I mention the First Amendment violation.

But seriously, I could've sworn I just read it is the GM list that has kept these types of courses center stage.

How so Adam?

I know of another in the golf industry that seems to discourage posting on here by his team...I understand it. What about that approach lacks balls?

C,mon Sully, It's "anti-intellecualism"

Some well read minority upstart starts pissing on your parade and you don't stand up to the criticism?

It's down right cowardly.

Mike -

I am speculating because I never been there, but maybe the fairway is flatter by the bunkers therefore making the left side of the fairway a better playing surface to the green. If you play safe to the right, you have more undulation plus you are below green level. Just one man's opinion looking at a picture.

The more I think of it the feistier I get.

Overly literal? Hmm. He must be referring to Darwin, Behr & other ODG's who wrote about the sport and it's fields. Not surprising Ol man Jones is known for his writting too. Only difference...Self promotion.

Plus, Rees's exclusionary comment about courses with splashy bunkering isnt very Big World. Is it?
