Who's opening what in 2007? 2008? 2009?
« on: October 21, 2007, 02:02:05 PM »
Sorry if this has been covered and I've just missed it, but it seems like there hasn't been a whole lot of talk about what different architects have in the pipeline.

Where are C&C working now?

To any of the architects who post, what courses do you have opening this year or next? Tom? Jeff? Love Design? Mike Young? Ian? Brian Phillips? Tim Liddy? Richard Mandell? (I know I'm going to overlook some guys, so apologies in advance.)

How about some of the architects who have posted but don't much anymore? Gil Hanse? Todd Eckenrode? Mike DeVries? Neal Meagher?

How about Rees, Fazio, Nicklaus, etc? Anyone know if they have anything special on the horizon?

Please note, I'm just curious to know what is coming up, I'm not looking to start bashing or salivating early.

 :)

George,

DeVries has nothing opening in the next year. I wish I had more to elaborate on than that.

George:

We didn't open any new courses in 2007 -- after a bunch in 2006, our latest projects were all quite time-consuming in construction.

2008 will be different:

The Renaissance Club at Archerfield -- opens spring 2008.
Aetna Springs (9 h) in northern California -- spring 2008.
Rock Creek Cattle Company, Montana -- June, 2008.
Wicked Pony in Oregon (if all goes well, some of it's still rock) -- fall 2008.

Our project at the Bay of Dreams in Mexico will probably open sometime in 2009.  Our next two construction starts, Old Macdonald at Bandon and the Cacique project in Costa Rica, are not scheduled to open until 2010.

It's possible that a couple of projects we've got in the early planning stages would be open before those, but I can't say yet ... in fact I can't say anything about them.

Olivas Links (Ventura, CA) opened in June. Peacock Gap (San Rafael, CA) opens early 2008. Peacock was a rebuild of a Wm. F. Bell design from the early 1960s. Wish there was more, but lots of work has moved slowly due to a variety of factors. I would be hesitant to predict beyond mid-2008.

I'll have two new course openings and one total redo, all in Texas.  All got grassed too late this year because of Tx rains, so expect July-August 2008 openings.

Bridges of Preston Crossing, Gunter, TX - New 18 with Fred Couples

Villages of Lone Oak, Lone Oak, TX - New 18

Weeks Park Golf Course, Wichita Falls, TX - Total 18 hole redo, with substantial rerouting

Oh, and I also have Gene Torrez Golf Course in Las Vegas, NM, a nine holer, opening sometime next sping.

Love Golf Design has a few opening;

Brunswick CC, Brunswick Ga...an 18 hole Ross restoration in that should open in two weeks.

River Hall...a new 18 hole private development course in Ft Meyers, Fla.....and it should open early in 08.

The Club at Irish Creek, Kannapolis, NC...a total redo plus five new holes [formerly the Kannapolis CC]. It should open early 08.

Ricefields in Riceboro, Ga....an 18 hole private that should open late 08.

The Dunes Course, Cabo San Lucas....an 18 hole resort course that should open in mid 08.

The Newark CC, about three miles from Newark, Del...but over the border in Maryland....an 18 hole semi private that should open late 08 or in 09.

LGD should start three more during 08.

In addition I am collaborating with Forrest Fezler to build an 18 hole semi private course in Gainesville Fl, Oak Tree Landing, that could start in late 08.....and another course 18 hole semi private course [as yet unnamed], in Del Rey Oaks, CA....that should begin construction in 09 [or 10 or 11 ....this is Ca. after all]

...and as any of the previous designers can attest to, there are always others out there floating around in various planning stages, but that are really hard to plan on as yet.

Tom Fazio has what appears to be a stellar course up on Lake Coeur d'Alene officially opening up in 2008 although there has been some play late this year on it.  It is called Gozzer Ranch and is located in Harrison, ID.  Here is a link:

Perhaps for this thread it would be helpful if people would stick to the facts, instead of wishing based on bad info.

Cabot Links hasn't started construction yet ... last I heard from Ran they plan to start next spring, but it sure won't be open in 2008.

The Prairie Club and Grateful Dunes are even more speculative than that, I think.

George:

We've got two openings in 2008:

The first is a complete renovation of The Water's Edge Country Club on Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia.  It was originally designed by a regional gca named Buddy Loving in the mid-eighties.  Our challenge from the OWner was to "preserve the Loving look", so I guess we can call it a restoration (no chuckles).  Nonetheless, It was something that is completely opposite of anything I would do, yet the results are impressive.  I enjoyed creating the typical seventies bunker look more than I thought I would, not that I will begin adopting that style.

The other opening are the first two phases of Army Navy Country Club in Washington DC.  The overall project is a complete renovation of 27 holes at their Arlington facility and 27 more at their Fairfax facility.

The first two phases are two par-threes at Arlington and seven more holes, also at Arlington.  The plan is to create a golden-age look at Arlington and an RTJ look at Fairfax.  The look at Arlington will be completely different than most of what has been popping up in the DC area the past few decades.

I will get my Associate, Walt, to post some photos later today when we get the time.

I would like some further info on the Del Rey Oaks project since I hadn't heard anything prior to this. Is this on any of the former Fort Ord property? I always thought that they could build at three or four courses on the Fort Ord property once the red tape lifted.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Mike, we had 24" in four days here in Pensacola and it's still raining.  I wish we could pump some up your way, most of this is now run off.  A lot of this weather is SW-NE.  Is any of it making it to ATL-Athens area?  I saw a photo of docks in Lake Lanier well up onto dry land in the mullet wrapper this morning.

Tom Fazio's Hasentree opened in Wake Forest, NC, just 5 minutes from me, this past Wednesday.

C&C's Sugarloaf Mountain (near Orlando) is due to open in early '08.

I think Lester George's Ballyhack in Roanoke, VA is supposed to open in '09.

I'm guessing Ebert & MacKenzie's Goodwood north of Toronto opened this year or will open next year.

David Kidd's Tetherow in Bend, Or may open in '08 or '09.

Also, Kidd's Huntsman's Springs in Driggs, ID, may open in late '09:

he bring some 'Strantz' to the design?

Wow, a course in Driggs, Idaho. My sister lives there so I may have to go out for a visit. I sure won't go in the winter.

Lake Presidential opens in Upper Waldorf, Maryland next year. Chris Cole from Landmark is the lead architect. Chris worked on the PGA West Stadium Course and Kiawah's Ocean Course to name a few.

Binks Forest in Wellington, FL just reopened today after a 5 year hiatus. Gene Bates did the renovation. The course was highly regarded after it opened in 1990 as a Johnny Miller/Gene Bates design. I'll probably play there in December.
