Not OT -Playing Lessons With The Pros needs your input!
« on: October 04, 2007, 10:13:00 AM »
Every now and then someone doing the Playing Lessons With The Pros segment on TGC plays at a cool course - Pavin at Aronimink, the Geibergers at Stone Eagle, Graham Marsh at Sutton Bay, etc.

Maybe if enough people request it, we can get TGC to do some episodes where we get to see some cool courses. Instead of hearing about how someone chooses a club, we could hear some other things, like how playing angles affect decisions, all the while getting to see a course many of us haven't seen otherwise.

How about:

Crenshaw at Sand Hills (or any number of other courses)?

Nicklaus at Sebonack (Tom D could caddy and provide commentary :))?

Jerry Pate at Pensacola CC?

Pete & Alice Dye at The Ocean Course?

Jay Siegel at Merion or PV or something like that?

Ray Floyd at Shinnecock?

Bob Ford at Seminole (yeah, that one has a good chance...)?

My own personal fav: Matthew Goggin at Barnbougle?

Give your own suggestions, and then we'll start bombarding TGC.

Hell of an idea, George!

Here's some that come to mind for me:

Geoff Shackelford at Rustic Canyon.
though this has less chance of occurring than Ford at Seminole, due to the way Geoff tends to rip TGC!

Tiger Woods at Cypress Point.
I'd just love to see how he tears up a course like that.

Seve Ballesteros at The Old Course
even if he can't play any more, I'd sure be interested in his thoughts on how he played it when he could

She already did one... Los Altos CC.  As I watched it I remember wishing it was at Pasatiempo.

So since we've seen her... how about watching a male pro attack that course?  Can't think of any with local ties....

Natalie did one in Vegas.

Love Shack @ RC, that's definitely in the spirit, but that might be the biggest long shot yet.

Been done also... a stupid course in Las Vegas, as I recall.  Her dad was with her and it was a surprisingly dull show.  It was cold also so she was all bundled up.  :'(

Not that I watch many of these, I really don't!  But these two with female pros I sure do remember.

Believe it or not Juli's done two episodes.

One at Los Altos CC AND one at Pasatiempo.

For some reason they're just not replaying the Pasatiempo episode.

My suggestion:

Start doing twosomes and skins at that or match play ... starting with:

Nicklaus and Watson at Turnburry or Els and Faldo at Muirfield.

Patrick - cool!  Hopefully the Pasatiempo episiode was better than the Los Altos one... the latter put the b in boring.

What was cool was she discussed a little about the history and playing the greens.

I have always though a call your shot broadcast would be neat to see. Player and caddie decide how to play. Then player or caddie announces shot to be attempted and why chosen. Announcer analyzes shot once made. Could be done in a competition format.

No matter which golf message board I am on, TGC's Playing Lessons From the Pros is always commented upon as being among everybody's favorite programming.  If TGC showedn nothing but Golf Central, the Nationwide Tour and Playing Lessons Form the Pros, I'd be a happy camper.  Every milisecond of "The Big Break Vol. Whatever" is a milisecond that is wasted when they have tape of Playing Lessons From the Pros.
I agree that the program could have an added bonus if they chose classic locations.  I'd vote for Geoff Ogilvy at Royal Melbourne (there was a Geoff Ogilvy episode once already).  Ben Crenshaw at Sand Hills is too much to even dream about.  Tiger at Augusta.  Nick Faldo (there was a very entertaining Faldo episode already) at Muirfield, Scotland.  Jack Nicklaus at Muirfield Village, Ohio.  Tom Weiskopf at the real Troon.  Ben Crenshaw at Old Prestwick.  Greg Norman at Lost Tree.  Steve Elkington (they've never done Elk, have they?) at Riviera.

I saw the Meg Mallon/Beth Daniel episode at Pine Tree -- I enjoyed seeing that course!

I guess I'd like to see Els at Wentworth.  Have they ever had an Els episode?

Instead of Tiger at Cypress Point, I'd like to see Ken Venturi there.

George,
 It's petty simple really.
Each one of us geeks, spread over this planet, take your digicam to your local world class golf course architecture example. Write some text, Shoot it, put in on you tube, or, find some savvy uber geek (any vols?) to compile them all.

It'll be our gift to the world.

Adam:  interesting idea, fun for us, but who else would watch?   ;)

Chuck:  my reasons for wanting Tiger at Cypress are wholly selfish.  I've studied that course more than any on this planet (which of course isn't saying much given I rarely study golf courses - but I have studied this one - own a couple books on it); and I've also been fortunate to play it more times than a guy like me really ought to.

So I don't think any pro could teach me much about the course that I don't already know.  Oh, Venturi could likely spin a few great yarns as he makes his way around, and that would be fun... but for me, that pales compared to what I'd learn from a current great player attacking that course.  I'm just really curious to see how they'd play it.

But hey, if they want to use Venturi or anyone else, it's still great by me!  Seeing that course on TV would be fantastic.

Isn't pitting two players at well known courses what Shell's Wonderful World of Golf would do?  (When, of course, they weren't putting on a competition to highlight the latest housing development/exotic vacatioon spot.)

There has been an impressive list of courses used over the years for this show.

Miller at Olympic would be cool, too.

Take step back, take a deep breath ...

Not to throw water on your idea but the last thing I would want to see is CPC or Oakmonth on a Playing Lessons With the Pros.

The format of the show is on the player, the mechanics of how they play the game, their swing keys, etc.  Since the episode is 30 minutes long and they show no more then 5 or 6 holes.  They could play this at Palo Alto Muni and still achieve the desired product.

The SWWoG format is better, almost all the holes are shown, including play from tee to green.

Mike, I agree that the SWWOG format is better - or at least was - but others have indicated the only way to get a course on there is to pony up the cash, which obviously no course I want to see is going to do!

I don't know if you saw the one at Sutton Bay with Graham Marsh, but it really was a neat look at the course with the architect. That's ideally what I'd like to see, hence the push for Ben @ SH.

Let's see, Jack's a great putter, putts well on all greens.

Johnny's not a great putter, struggled on difficult Olympic greens, 43 putts....

Don't even bother, George.  Olympics greens are in general not highly contoured.  And Miller's putting woes were caused  by the yips - the misses were all generally straight putts of less than 3 feet.  I was there.

But nice try.
