Golf Course Architecture Library
« on: August 12, 2002, 02:18:08 PM »
In the last year, I've acquired nearly fifty books on golf course architecture.  I'm confident that my collection is incomplete.

I'd like to add to my collection.  Any suggestions?

My favorites thus far:

GOLF ARCHITECTURE IN AMERICA, Geo. C. Thomas Jr
THE ANATOMY OF A GOLF COURSE, Tom Doak
THE COURSE BEAUTIFUL, A.W. Tillinghast
THE SPIRIT OF ST. ANDREWS, Dr. Alister MacKenzie
THE LIFE AND WORK OF DR. A.K., Doak, et al
A.K.'s CYPRESS POINT CLUB, Geoff Shakelford

I better stop now before this becomes a complete list!

What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

SCOTLAND'S GIFT is definitely on my short list.  Are there any vintage photos or plans within this book?

Carlyle:

There are many you could add, but how about two from our Australian friend Paul Daley:

"Links Golf"
"The Sandbelt"

The latter includes David Scaletti's fabulous photography of Melbourne area golf courses.

The Architectural Side of Golf by Whethered and Simpson. You can get it at www.golfiana.com. I think it costs about $25.

I don't know how I would ever have been able to look into the past with any degree of pleasure or enjoy the present with any degree of contentment if it had not been for the extraordinary influence the game of golf has had upon my welfare.

Hazards by Bauer
Architectural Side of Golf by Wethered and Simpson
Golf Courses of ...by Darwin
The Captain by G.S
Scotlands Gift by CBM was reprinted by Classics of Golf/Flagstick press and is reasonably priced

Many of the older books have been reprinted and are much more affordable, if you need any help with finding dealers shoot me a message. Before GCA my architectural studies were gained through collecting the few books that were out there. Fortunately in the past few years the floodgates have opened and we have a feast of architecture books to choose from.

I know that George Bahto was working on a book dealing with Seth Raynor, but I am not sure if it has been completed or released yet.

I would recommend Hurdzan's book as well.

Also check out "Golf Course Architecture" written by Alister Mackenzie, it is short, but has some good information in it.

Whatever happened to Flagstick Press and The Classics of Golf? I believe I have all of the books they put out, but I have not seen anything about them in several years. Out of business?

Carlyle,
C.B. Macdonald's "Scotland's Gift" does have a number of old photgraphs, and a fold out plan of N.G.L.A. My two-cents, Golf As it Was Meant to be Played by Michael Fay on Donald Ross designs. Ditto all the above recomendations.

it's an oldie.

i'd check rhodmcewan.com or abebooks.com

the book has the best subtitle of any book, let alone golf book!

it's been republished.  here's a description.

Bauer, Aleck, Hazards, Those Essential Elements in a Golf Course Without Which the Game Would be Tame and Uninteresting.

With contributions by Peter Thomson, Fred Hawtree, Peter Dobereiner and Philip Truett.

Republished in a limited edition of 750 copies, first published in 1913, illustrated, articles and discourses on famous golf holes which were noted for their terrifying hazards, detailed plans of each hole, showing bunkers, hummock slopes and other features with in many cases photographs to support the plans.

I don't know if Flagstick Press is still around. They were a few years ago. The books show up on used book sites like abebooks.com which is where I would look first since it will be cheaper. Next go to the dealers. I have a friend Ron Muszalski who works at Cambridge Golf Antiquities at Pebble Beach who most likely has what you are looking for or else can find it for you. Mention my name when talking to Ron. Other dealers are Grant Books in the UK who actually does a lot of the reprints as well as dealing old books. Rhod McEwan is another excellent source who puts out a huge catalog periodically. There will be an auction here in the S.F. area in November that will have a large collection from the USGA library. Good luck.

A new book that I just got information about in the mail yesterday is:
"Routing the Golf Course: The Art & Science That Forms the Golf Journey" by Forrest L. Richardson.

There was another one included in the mailing but I can't put my finger on it at the moment. I'll have to add it later.
