Jim,

Perhaps the tiebreaker versus #6 at NGLA is that there really is nowhere you can comfortably "MISS" the green and make a par...as illustrated by your post a day or two ago about your first playing...

I aimed at the front right corner fringe, figuring that any sort of tug long or left was a sure 3 whack

Perhaps if you didn't use such wacky putting methods, you'd have more confidence in your putting and wouldn't have to intentionally aim for fringes.

Tom "in my one play of NGLA, pulled it wildly to left side of 6, only to calmly two-putt to the far right pin, ho-hum, what's the big deal about this green" Huckaby

Truer words have not been written. You do not want to miss this green left, right, long or short. And we certainly don't need to bring my first go round up again. I like to remember my most recent one ;D.

Rob,
If you want to see a great Biarritz, get over to Angels Crossing in Michigan some day. Jim Thompson took the Biarritz to a whole new level there.

Both of mine are on TOC. I have tried REALLY hard to separate them, but in my heart of hearts I love them both equally. One is Nick Nolte, one is the other guy...

Just thinking about the approach shots to 2/16 is getting me high. WHAT a green complex...! Limitless interest, boundless fun, a study in itself.

BUT...

7/11. Hubbahubbahubba...

The view, those CONTOURS :o, the FUN!!!

Two/Four greens which for me epitomise why golf course architecture is, at the very least, worthy of intelligent debate.

Can you recommend any good places to find that?

Not surprisingly, most greens mentioned have a lot of internal contouring.  I think that several greens on a course with a lot of contouring is all that is necessary.  Subtle interplays of slope are a lot more interesting to me.

17 at NGLA, from tee to green, is my least favorite hole on the course.

J,
I hear there's a bar somewhere in Philly...

Apparently, there's a guy in the third booth on the left, who will - for the price of a micro-brewed Ale - happily give you a 30-minute discourse on the relative merits of the contouring of the Redan at NGLA vs. the maintenence meld problems caused by the tree-infestations of the Eastern seaboards finest venues. ;)

Call 555-9834 and ask for 'Wigwam'. (I believe his real initials bear some relation to his nom-de-guerre....)

I'm going with the practice green at Pac Dunes.

Build a course with 18 greens like that, and you'll be 3 putting a helluva lot more than 2 putting...

I'll repeat the Road hole. The best green without bunkers: 14th at ANGC. Best par three green: 16th at ANGC with a second to #6 at Portrush.

NGLA #1 is the neatest. #1 at Alpine says "Welcome to putting Hell" better than anything I've ever seen.

Tim named one of mine already with the 6th at Riviera. Here's a few more...

8th at Pasatiempo
14th at LACC North
16th at Colonial
15 and 16 at Riviera (hell, they're all great!)
13 and 14 at Pebble Beach
16th at Rancho Santa Fe
There are so many at Stone Eagle, I can't pick just one
10 and 13 at Pauma Valley
4th at Spyglass (I think it's daring)

I was recently impressed by the 8th at Yale; given the demands of the approach combined with the bold contour on the RH side and the overall slope.

You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?
