Best/Worst back to back holes...
« on: September 26, 2007, 06:45:14 PM »
The Osprey Meadows thread got into this topic.  I'd like to hear your thoughts on what you think are the best/worst back to back holes on any course you can think of and why.

First example:  #14 & #15 - Bandon Trails.  IMHO they failed to create the classic risk/reward short par.  Instead, they created a "nowhere to hit it" short par 4."  I don't think 15 is overwhelmingly good, but it looks outstanding after 14.

13 and 14 at Seattle CC, with 14 being the awesome hole.

At my home course the other day, I hit it to about 3 feet on the second hole (a par 3) and made birdie.

Then I got to the next tee and pumped one out of bounds and made 7.

I'm guessing, however, that that wasn't what you were talking about. :)

13 and 14 at Inglewood.  (14 is the Par 5 with the new bunkers, correct?)
14 being the good hole.

Perfection and Redan at North Berwick. (14 & 15)

I birdied both in the same round on my way to a career low score, so my prejudice is obvious.

Beautiful, interesting to play, memorable, and influential.

On the other hand, if I birdied them both, how great can they be?

I also think 17 & 18 at TOC stack up pretty well--17 for quality and 18 for atmosphere.

Whoops--for a moment there I thought you were asking for best/best.

My reading skills must be deteriorating along with the golf swing.

11 and 12 at the Northumberland.  11 is a modern aberration, dull, flat (except for the awful mounded green) and entirely out of keeping with the rest of the course.  12 is a good, solid, typically Colt par 4 with lots of strategy off the tee.  Not a tough (or great) hole but a lovely one which highlights how woeful the new hole before it is.

7 and 8 at Slaley Hall Hunting Course.  7 is one of the very good holes on the course.  Strongly uphill with a demanding drive and a wonderful two or three level saddle green.  8 is just rubbish.

12 and 13 at Muirfield?  12 isn't a bad hole but it's certainly one of the weakest on the course.  13 is a great par three.  Uphill, tight green, wonderful bunkering.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Not that it is authoritative, but which are the only back-to-back holes selected in George Peper's book on the world's greatest 500 golf holes?

Friar's Head 14th and 15th

Worst

Macrahanish 17th and 18th (love the course, just a very weak finish)

Ballyneal #7 and #8 along with Sand Hills #7 and #8 are two of my favorite sets of back to back holes.

4 and 5 at Bethpage Black.

ETA:  but I'm 99.9% sure he also included 15 and 16 at CPC.

17/18 at Cypress Point. You are asking for the best then worst in succession right?

Jim,

You have two of the three that I'm aware of.  Which Flynn course has the only other back-to-back holes? Hint:  They are both par 4s.

Eger would have had a fit if 9 and 10 at SH made that list...what year was Peper's book/list published?

12 and 13 at Cascades are pretty cool and tough to argue.

The book was published in 2003.

David Eger doesn't like 9 and 10 at Shinnecock Hills?  What are his complaints?

Flynn moved the stream to create holes 12 and 13 at Cascades.  He made a change to 13 (in 1935 I think), moving the stream to the left rather than having it cross on a diagonal (flooding issues) and instead placed three diagonal bunkers in its place.  It is a very cool hole.  The bunkering on 12 has been restored (fairway and greenside) and the hole is much closer to its Flynn form than it has over the last 50 years.

"Doesn't like" and "have had a fit" are probably the wrong terminology...he was speaking in terms of setting up the course for a US Open and said they were too severe...I chalked it up to just one of those things he had to recognize in advance to avoid the bitching and griping the guys on TV like to do...especially about the USGA...

Whilst not having played them;

16/17 At Cypress Point would appear to be a good contender for best/best. And 17/18 contenders for best/worst. I guess it is more to do with maximising the land rather than the good Dr running out of steam.
