Spinoffs and Splitoffs
« on: August 15, 2002, 03:01:09 PM »
As some of you know, Hazeltine National was started as a spinoff from The Minikahda Club, and here in Denver both Cherry Hills and Wellshire GC were started by members splitting off from Denver CC (the purported reason for Cherry Hills starting up in the '30s was that Denver CC was getting to be too "social," ie women and children actually were visible there, and they wanted a place for "serious" golf... :o :o).

What are some other examples of spinoffs and splitoffs in your necks of the woods? I'm sure there are many, particularly in the Northeast.

All The Best,

Royal Melbourne splintered when it moved from Caulfield to Sandringham. Some members chose to stay at Caulfield and form their own club; later moving to what is now Metropolitan.

Windsong was proposed as a second course for Minneapolis Golf Club members.  Never materialized, but the developer went ahead anyway.  Should open next summer.  Classify that how you want.

Tangent to this discussion, you could do the "I couldn't get into _________, so I founded ___________."

Castle Pines, Sanctuary
Baltimore CC (I think), Caves Valley
Stillwater, Oak Glen

National Golf Links of America was a spinoff of Scotland.  American golfers were tired of getting the priviledge of "Riding in Steerage" and eating Mueslix.

I am not 100% sure about this one, ??? but I do believe that Old Town in WInston-Salem, NC was founded by some disgruntled members from Forsyth CC, also in W-S, NC.  I believe there is a regular GCA'er from Old Town Club who could answer this one.

Merion Golf Club is a SpinOff from Merion Cricket Club, and I think that Pine Valley is a SpinOff from Merion Golf Club.

Robert:
While Merion is a spinoff from Merion Cricket it was a split between tennis players and golfers.  Bobby Jones won his grand slam at "Merion Cricket Club".

J.Walter Pew arranged the financing for the golfers to buy the golf club from Merion Cricket.

Tom Paul would know better, but I believe Gulph Mills was a spinoff from Merion.

Tom, what's the history here.

Cheers,

Dave

I believe that Winged Foot was initially affiliated with the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan.
In San Francisco, the group that established the original golf course in the Presidio moved on to build another golf course in the Ingleside district of SF before they built and moved to the San Francisco Golf Club with Tillinghast.

Rolling Green was spun off from Springhaven.I believe it was to create a more serious focus on golf. There is also talk about alcohol.I believe the creators of RG were the Quakers who wanted no drinking at their club.Times have changed.
the topography of RG and Springhaven are quite different, even though they within a few miles of each other.
