O.T. Did Betsy King blow it?

I watched the finish of the State Farm Classic, LPGA today.  Of course I am a homer and was all for the wire to wire leader, Sherri Steinhour.  But, I haven't seen such an exciting finish, capped with the classiest display of sportsmanship, than what we saw today.  

Christina Kim was passed over for the Solheim, with King giving the nod to the rookie Castrale who finished one off the team points qualifying, and Diaz (14th in points), who is running out of years she will play, and is playing fair.

But, Kim has all the passion and spirit that I think we like to see in the International event.  She was such an inspiration to see her cheering on Steinhour, even though a falter by Sherri would have given Kim a playoff or even a victory.  And, it almost happened with Kim's amazing chip-ins after chip ins, and clutch putting by Steinhour, all while Annika was lurking with Heatherington.  Kim just has that extra something and unrestrained enthusiasm.

Kim was a winner today in my eyes, and Steinhour was really clutch to finally win the toon-a-mint.

I think the Solheim team captain faltered...

Hard to tell -- I personally would've liked to have seen Kim on the team, and her reaction to Sherri Cheesehead was pretty classy. But you never know with these picks -- in some ways, these international golfing competition wild card picks are the biggest crapshoot in sports, because you're trying to guess (and differentiate) how one golfer will do in one tournament for perhaps two or three or four rounds at most (some of which won't go 18). And the rookie vs. non-rookie thing is also hard to judge -- Kim and her fellow rookies (Gulbis, Craemer esp.) just stomped all over the Euros last time around, and rookies sometimes bring a what-they-hey attitude compared to some pressure-sensitive vets (like Redman falling apart at the last Solheim). I liked the pick of Diaz, because I do think for clubhouse/team meeting/team bonding sorts of things, it's good to have a mix of vets and newbies. I personally would've picked Kim, but then again, I also argued earlier this month that Glover and Mahan were very solid Prexy Cup picks over some who argued for the more experienced DiMarco.

Kim is verbose and a loose cannon.

You can bet if Kim was popular with the other players she would have got the nod.
