Dun Laoghaire GC-how long left?
« on: July 17, 2007, 10:18:14 PM »
Anyone know when this old Colt course is due to be ploughed under?  The club sold out,  literally!

Would love to see some final pics, if there are any local GCAers willing...?

not sure about that, jack... planning permission has been granted on the far side of the road (holes 4 to 14) but not on the clubhouse side yet... with the new 27 hole facility complete up at the leadmines, i can't imagine there's too much time left before they break earth on the old site...

...dun laoghaire gc should be ashamed of themselves... not only have they given up their current site but the developer is laughing all the way to the bank having completely got the better of the deal...

...haven't walked the new course yet but it's very open ground on the side of a hill... who designed it?

The new course was designed by Hawtree's and from what I have heard its all seeded, just a few snags. I heard the old site was bought for 800 million euro?? with 30 million spent on the new course.

800 million euro could be right... it is a small course, squeezed into less than 100 acres i believe... the smallest duplex apartments will be selling for one million euro plus as it is a prime site...

by all accounts i've heard, the developer got the land at a snip compared to other golf course / housing development swaps being touted at the moment...

didn't realise it was a hawtree designed course... must take a trip up for a closer look...

Jack it's a big ask but seeing as this work is going to be lost forever, can you think about sending the photo;s to Frank Ponts site.

http://www.golfarchitecturepictures.com/Pages/contact.html

He asks to get a minimum of 100 to get all the details but it's such a great thing he's doing preserving pictures of these courses at a moment in time. The problem is it's really not practical to get that number and play at the same time.

PS If you do get a chance I have a personal request.  The trophy boards will feature, Muldoon on them; Sally, Dick and Raymond.  It will be a year or more before I'm anywhere near there, first place I ever swung a club.  It didn't grab me then and it was nearly 40 years before it did.

Let's make GCA grate again!

johnny... i've looked up some more info on this... the lands were sold for €100m which certainly is a snip... i wouldn't be surprised if the true valuation should have been closer to €800m... there seems to be a lot a bad blood... see this link:

a couple of photos of the old and new course here:

Ally
100 million does sound like a snip.
Have you had a chance to view any other major developments in Ireland?
I had the opportunity to visit Lough Rynn recently, looks like it will be an exciting addition.

i was very kindly taken around bunclody last month... should be some lovely riverside holes when that is finished...

...other than that, not really... i've seen plenty of the construction shots out at killeen castle but haven't actually walked the course...

Jack and Ally thanks for offering, that would be great.

Given the astronomical price of land in urban GB&I I wonder if this selling up will become a trend ???

i was actually playing last night with a dun-laoghaire member... he said there is various discussion going on at the moment about photographing the course because they will be moving in two weeks time and there will be no maintenance on the existing layout... time is short... i'll keep you informed...

tony,

dun-laoghaire have someone in photographing the course at the moment... i am awaiting a call back from the manager to see who he is / whether he is getting involved in the detail / whether he will be able to send these on to frank pont... i'll let you know...

jack,

if this photographer has all angles covered, let's play somewhere else next week (unless you're particularly bothered about playing D-L again?)... i'll give you a shout when i hear more...
